Chanel 2.55
When Gabrielle Chanel designed the 2.55 handbag in February 1955, it caused quite a stir. The first women’s handbag to have shoulder straps, it allowed women to be hands-free, the practicality of which, at the time, was considered almost rebellious. The disguised zipper pocket inside was said to be used by Gabrielle Chanel to store secret love letters.
Chanel Classic
Inspired by the 2.55, Karl Lagerfeld created the 11.12 in the 1980s. Retaining the elegance of the original iteration, the most obvious difference is that the updated table lock features the iconic CC logo. The style is a “classic” for a reason – when you think of a Chanel handbag, it is likely to be the 11.12 – and, thus, it will always hold its value.
Chanel Boy
The Chanel Boy series, launched by Karl Lagerfeld in 2011, is named after Gabrielle Chanel’s first boyfriend “Boy” Capel, an English polo player who inspired a masculine twist on the 2.55. The design remains extremely valuable to this day.
Chanel Grand Shopping Tote
Chanel’s roomy Grand Shopping Tote (or GST for short) is one of the most coveted styles in the brand’s handbag history. A hit in the mid-2000s due to its practical size that allows for the easy transportation of daily essentials, the GST was in fact discontinued in 2015, which has only made it more desirable today.
Chanel Gabrielle
Named after Gabrielle Chanel herself, this bag was part of the brand’s Spring/Summer ’17 collection and became an instant classic. The long straps and structured shape make it versatile for men or women, proving a favourite of stars including G-Dragon, Meghan Markle, and Caroline de Maigret.
Chanel Gabrielle Backpack
Due to its popularity over the years, the Chanel Gabrielle Backpack has had many updated iterations over the years. A modern classic, the elegant practicality of the backpack has seen it swooped up by style-setters including Penelope Cruz and Cara Delevingne.
Chanel Wallet On Chain
A perennial favourite, the wallet on a chain is the most accessible of Chanel’s designs, with the characteristic CC metal buckle, quilted leather body, and leather-metal chain strap. Its versatile size allows for holding necessities without being overbearing, and can be styled into various looks, daytime or evening.
Chanel 19
The Chanel 19 was launched by the brand last year, hence the name, and became an instant “It” bag. The enlarged rhombus quilts and soft leather lie contrary to the current trend for tough and boxy-looking bags.
