Reese Witherspoon is single-handedly bringing back the Noughties. After years of taking on weightier dramatic roles, Netflix announced on 13 May that the Hollywood power-player would star in two romantic comedies for the service in 2020 – one of which has been penned by The Devil Wears Prada screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna. Now, it’s been confirmed that the Oscar winner will also reprise the pink-obsessed, Chihuahua-toting Elle Woods for a third instalment of Legally Blonde. Cue Delta Nu-like screams of joy.
Per Deadline, Mindy Kaling will write the script with Dan Goor – Kaling’s long-term writing partner on Parks & Recreation. The pair also recently collaborated on a film centred around a massive Indian wedding, starring none other than Priyanka Chopra. Notably, when Legally Blonde 3 was first green-lit several years ago, original scribes Kirsten Smith and Karen McCullah were due to return for the project – but it seems that Kaling and Goor will be penning their own version from scratch. Witherspoon will also produce the film through her company Hello Sunshine – a move Miss Woods would surely approve of.
So, what will Elle get up to next? As a reminder, at the close of Legally Blonde 2, everybody’s favourite Harvard grad (sorry, Zuckerberg) successfully fought to ban cosmetics testing on animals in Washington D.C., and married law school boyfriend Emmett… before hinting that she was considering running for office during a White House drive-by. In short, a presidential campaign is by no means off the cards. (God knows, crazier things have happened in American politics.) Vote for Elle!
