While some thrive on the hunt and chase of the latest ‘IT’ bag, I, on the other hand, am about the shoes. A wall full of shoes is something I cannot walk away from in a store, and I have a harder time letting go of my shoes than I do of my handbags, allowing myself one special shoe purchase each season. Even an ankle injury from two years ago which has limited my heel height hasn’t deterred my habit. There are a few stylish shapes that withstand the test of time, surpassing trends and seasons, that will compliment any wardrobe.
The Chunky Sandal
Let’s face it, it’s summer 70% of the year in Hong Kong, so a sturdy sandal that will last you through these gruelling hot months is 100% necessary. My favourite choice lately is the chunky Birkinstock or Teva-inspired sandal, and the ones I have on heavy rotation in my own closet are from Chanel and Suicoke. The thick and comfortable sole will ensure you can be running around in them all day long, and they’re great to pair with big-volume beach dresses, summer tailoring or even keeping it casual with a t-shirt and shorts.
The Barely-There Sandal
This is a style that can be invested in with almost every heel height, from flat or kitten to upwards of 5 inches. Think simple slides, thin-strapped lace-up sandals, or mules – they’re a no-brainer and go with just about any outfit you can think of in the summer months. Slides and flip flops are an easy day-to-day option and the closest thing to being barefoot. Be sure to check out labels like Emme Parsons and Aeyde for flat options, while Manu Atelier and By Far offer a variety of square-toed, mid-heel sandals. For those wanting greater heights, Saint Laurent, Bottega Veneta and Jacquemus are labels I turn to.
The Pointed Pump
A classic pointed pump is a staple that every woman should have in their closet- I would suggest something in black, white, neutral or metallic as it can go with a wide range of what’s in your wardrobe. It’s important to find a brand with a shape and fit that works for you- this could mean a sling back, additional ankle straps or even a wraparound strap like the ones we are seeing from The Attico this season.
The Feminine Flat
Think the duo-tone Chanel ballerina flats, or a pair of flats that work with skinny jeans or under an A-line skirt. While these may not have been at the forefront of trends recently, they are a trusty shape that will work with just about any look. Jimmy Choo is a fail-safe label for me, while Gucci’s horse-bit flats with a chain strap and the foldable ballerina flats by Khaite are amongst my favourites this autumn.
The Loafer
A little more masculine than a flat, loafers or slip-ons are as easy choice when it comes to tailoring or trouser looks. I’ve seen the most perfect penny loafers from Celine, or if you’re looking for something to make a statement, the JW Anderson slippers with an oversized chain are surely going to win over your heart.
The White Trainer
Nowadays, it’s hard to find a luxury label that doesn’t make a classic white lace-up sneaker, suggesting just how essential a style it is. There are also brands that have built their entire businesses around the simple sneaker style (Common Projects, and the sustainable Veja). It doesn’t matter if you prefer slip ons or lace ups, minimalist or OTT, there are so many variations out there. Personal favourites of mine currently are from Golden Goose.
The Heeled Ankle Boot
The ankle boot, or the ‘bootie’, has reigned for years due to its ease and versatility. Similar to the pointed pump, I would suggest investing in this seasonal staple in an easy-to-match colour. I have more pairs of Saint Laurent booties than I would like to say, but there are slight variations that I come to love from season to season. And for Autumn/Winter 2020, I’m looking for a cowboy boot in the perfect shade of tobacco.
The Chunky Boot
We’ve seen the return of thick-soled boots in a big way, thanks to labels like Prada, Alexander McQueen and Bottega Veneta. Whether your shape of choice is the Chelsea or the combat, the important thing is the double stacked, rugged rubber soles. My lace-up boots by Both Paris and Lug boot by Bottega Veneta were on heavy rotation last winter, and I’m certainly expecting to get back into them once the temperate drops.
The Knee-High Block Heel Boot
This is a style that goes without saying as an essential for the autumn/winter months. The shape feels refreshing after many seasons of ankle boots. I’m a big fan of the embossed croc styles from Paris Texas, which have a bit of a Western feel, and they work perfectly with sweaters and midi skirts or dresses, and can also be worn over skinny jeans or leggings and under a big coat for Winter. Another pair I’m eye-ing this season are the Chanel mid-calve Western boots in black with a burgundy trim.
