This one’s for the girls. To honour International Women’s Day, alt-crowd hotspot Terrible Baby is teaming up with woman-built menstrual healthcare brand LUÜNA for a quiz night all about periods. The quiz looks to explore the portrayals of womens’ bodies throughout history, hoping to deconstruct social stigmas and truly celebrate women for the powerhouses they are. So really, it’s for everyone — we all could learn a thing or two.

Coco Chanel: The Life of a Fashion Icon, The Hong Kong Ballet

Coco Chanel: The Life of a Fashion Icon is a co-production between The Hong Kong Ballet, Atlanta Ballet, Queensland Ballet and will feature live musical accompaniment courtesy of The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. Premiering in March, the ballet chronicles the complex life of Coco Chanel, the woman behind one of the largest fashion empires of the century. As a production dedicated to someone who is responsible for the wardrobes of an entire era of modern women via timeless LBD’s and tweed skirt suits, we can only imagine the incredible artistry that will grace the Lyric Theatre stage. With a widely respected creative team behind set design, costumes, and the musical score, Coco Chanel: The Life of a Fashion Icon is a must-see for all fashionistas. There will be five showtimes in total and as with all grand productions, it’s best to reserve a spot well in advance.

POPFEST, HKT x West Kowloon Cultural District

If you missed out on this year’s Clockenflap, there’s no need to fret. West Kowloon is bringing us ten days of the best in Hong Kong’s music scene with Popfest, the city’s largest music festival yet. From Cantopop girl group COLLAR and dream-pop artist Allex Chan aka. Room307, to familiar names like Juno Mak and Ivana Wong, hear from the city’s biggest voices and rising artists through a diverse range of programmes. “Unboxed” offers four themed raves covering experimental pop, while “Popnorama” is three days of outdoor concerts featuring both solo performances and an exciting lineup of collaboration stages. The Popfest music festival also pays homage to the iconic Leslie Cheung with a multimedia tribute spotlighting the star’s most renowned tracks. Last but certainly not least, the M+ Live Cinema joins Popfest with “Dragon’s Delusion–Paracusia”, a hybrid screening that features Kongkee’s dynamic animated works alongside live improvisational music accompaniment by the Freespace Ensemble.
For those who aren’t able to snag tickets to the programs but find themselves itching to join in on the festivities, drop by Lau Bak Livehouse for free nightly performances by emerging local talent, the Harbourside Lawn for an endless stream of outdoor performances, and the GastroPark for live DJ sets, vibrant festival installations or a quick bite.

HSBC/Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Sevens 2023

The Hong Kong Sevens need no introduction. Rugby fans or not, the costumed crowds at the Hong Kong sevens boast an infectious energy like no other. Less than 6 months since their last run, the premier rugby tournament is back in full swing. For the first time in sevens history, women’s teams will compete in their own pool alongside their male counterparts — a fitting change for Women’s History Month. This year’s event will also feature performances from global musical acts, including DJ Soda, Belgian punk rock artist Plastic Bertrand, and Hong Kong’s very own Joyce Cheng, who will star at the sevens’ opening ceremony. With Saturday spots going fast, be sure to grab a seat at the stadium early to avoid that last-minute Instagram call of desperation! Tickets are currently up for sale on multiple platforms.

HK International Film Festival

After a slew of disruptions to last year’s event due to unfortunate weather and unforeseen circumstances, the annual Hong Kong International Film Festival returns this March. The 47th HKIFF will see a good mix of in-person screenings, events and online programmes, as well as the return of overseas filmmakers, who were overwhelmingly absent from the festival throughout the past few years. While it has been announced that Aaron Kwok will take on the role as the festival’s ambassador for the fifth consecutive year, the HKIFF’s full lineup has yet to be revealed. At the moment, we can expect screenings of four groundbreaking Chinese films including a director’s cut of Patrick Tam’s Hong Kong New Wave film, Nomad, re-edited and restored for 4K viewing.
