The fashion world came together at the Grand Palais in Paris yesterday to honour the late fashion legend Karl Lagerfeld. Timed to coincide with Paris Men’s Fashion Week, “Karl For Ever” was a joyful tribute jointly held by Chanel, Fendi and Lagerfeld’s eponymous label, with music performances, touching speeches and screenings that celebrated the life of the designer, who passed away in February at the age of 85 and was cremated in a private ceremony.
Designed by theatre and opera director Robert Carsen, the 90-minute event took place in the Grand Palais, where Lagerfeld frequently held Chanel runway shows, except this time its walls were hung with portraits of the designer and occasionally, his cat Choupette.
The tribute began with a montage of documentary footage of Lagerfeld, before moving onto musical performances by Pharrell Williams and Lang Lang. Tilda Swinton, Helen Mirren and Cara Delevingne performed selected readings on stage, while LVMH chairman Sidney Toledano, Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo, and Alain Wertheimer – one of two brothers who owns Chanel – made speeches remembering the designer’s many facets. On screen, the likes of Valentino Garavani, Maria Grazia Chiuri, Jeff Koons and Baz Luhrmann also paid their respects.
In attendance was a who’s who in the world of fashion and culture at large, including Anna Wintour, Gigi Hadid, French first lady Brigitte Macron, Stella McCartney and Carla Bruni Sarkozy. View the gallery below for more photos of the ceremony.
