Three years and 74 laboratory trials in the making, Tom Ford Research has finally entered the skincare game, debuting with two perfected products: Tom Ford Research Serum Concentrate and Tom Ford Research Crème Concentrate. Both formulations centre on the power of caffeine, which through new scientific findings is proven to increase the skin’s natural energy by promoting the movement of sodium ions in the epidermis. The effect is a potent boost in hydration, brightness and smoothness that brings an overall awakened effect like a double espresso shot for the complexion.
Before encountering the formula, sleek Tom Ford packaging makes a sharp first impression: matte white casing, silver chrome trims, and subtle ergonomic design that fits elegantly in the hand. There’s a luxurious weightiness and a strong magnetic cap that closes with a satisfying snap — minute details that the perfectionist in Tom Ford knows to fine-tune. Indeed, impactful design is familiar Tom Ford territory, but it’s the precision in the science that breaks new ground.
To meet his exacting standards, Tom Ford assembled his own team of top scientists to create what previously didn’t exist. Tom Ford scientists identified three potent key ingredients: White Porcelain Cacao (a rare variety of cocoa with high polyphenol content and antioxidant protective power), Caffeine, and Gyokuro (a special variety of Japanese green tea grown in the shade resulting in high amounts of theanine and amino acid). These star ingredients are combined with hyaluronic acid and peptides to visibly renew and invigorate skin, as demonstrated in clinical studies on both men and women.
The Serum Concentrate has a medium texture gel consistency, pale pink in colour, that instantly absorbs into the skin leaving zero residue. It’s a great layering product for multi-step skincare routines, especially for hot summer mornings requiring a boost of energy. The Crème Concentrate has a gel-cream consistency that cocoons dehydrated skin with a velvet matte finish, almost similar to the porcelain texture of the packaging, making it perfect for both men and women. Both formulas are fragrance-free but do have a slight, inoffensive scent. There was a faint tingling effect upon application, which subtly zaps the skin awake but quickly dissipates. Skin felt balanced and hydrated throughout the hot Hong Kong summer day with no signs of afternoon greasiness. But those with more mature skin types or living in colder climate may require a richer, lipid-based moisturiser as a top up on especially dry areas.
“My vision is to merge breakthrough skin science with true luxury, to create transformative skincare regardless of skin type or gender,” said Tom Ford. “This is the reason I established Tom Ford Research. Working closely with a team of scientists, we develop what is truly remarkable and that which delivers undeniable visible results.”
Tom Ford Research’s first two skincare products, Tom Ford Research Serum Concentrate and Tom Ford Research Crème Concentrate, will make their global debut in September 2019.
