When the nominations for this year’s Oscars were revealed in January earlier this year, fans of Crazy Rich Asians were rightfully angered to see that the film – which quickly became the highest grossing romantic comedy of this decade upon its release last year – had earned not a single nomination. They still had reason to tune in, however, when the cast members showed up to the award ceremony and effectively stole the show with an impeccable showing of style.

Gemma Chan

The British-born actress – who plays heiress Astrid Leong in the movie – wore a hot pink high-necked Valentino gown from the label’s Spring/Summer 2019 haute couture collection, complete with pockets in which she hid rice crackers to keep her hunger at bay. Among many pink gowns that night, Chan’s left the brightest impression.

Constance Wu

Comparisons between Constance Wu’s Crazy Rich Asians character Rachel and Belle from Beauty and the Beast were plentiful – both were lifted from (relative) normalcy to fairytale lifestyles, and both wore stunning yellow gowns to mesmerising effect (although only one version could be confirmed as custom Versace). One can only hope that the 36-year-old actress, who presented at the ceremony, has a Disney remake in the works.

Michelle Yeoh

The 56-year-old silver screen veteran looked radiant as ever in an ethereal, silver sequinned, off-shoulder Elie Saab gown and matching silver jewellery from Chopard and Richard Mille. Yeoh, who played Singaporean matriarch Eleanor Young, was also a presenter at the awards.

Awkwafina

Never one to shy away from attitude, on the screen as Peik-Lin Goh as much as in real life, Awkwafina broke out a lavender pantsuit from DSquared2 along with a purse-turned-tequila flask – no doubt to provide some liquid courage before presenting alongside John Mulaney. Let’s hope she returns next year to host the entire ceremony, start to finish.

Looking every inch the part of Singapore’s most eligible bachelor Nick Young, Henry Golding wore a custom tuxedo complete with waistcoat from Ralph Lauren Purple Label.
