Years from now, when a new generation of kids wants to dress like 2023, what sort of objects will they look at? May this wrap-up be but a humble guide for them. While it’s true that the death of trends has been wildly exaggerated, the rise of microtrends in their stead can make it harder to pinpoint more specific fashion trends. Harder but not impossible, and although the objects featured here may seem hodgepodge in nature, they tell us something about ourselves at this point in time (likely that our lives are guided by chaos).

Except for a few items of clothing, the year belonged to accessories, especially statement shoes, that, in keeping with our postpandemic model, continue to prioritize comfort over anything else. The list also shows how essential—and influential— celebrity culture remains, from Lionel Messi’s sold-out Inter Miami jersey (which goes hand in hand with the soccer fever currently taking over fashion) to the Chanel sunglasses worn by Lily-Rose Depp’s character in The Idol(the show may have lasted just five episodes, but its fashion influence shall remain eternal!) and Britney Spears’s memoir, The Woman In Me, which surely delivered Addison Rae’s most iconic fashion moment this year. Read through to find the 15 items that defined 2023 fashion trends.

Look Ma, No Pants

Last November, Kendall Jenner was photographed out and about in Los Angeles wearing a Bottega Veneta look consisting of a conservative navy sweater paired with just tights. Then in March of this year, we were treated to a Miu Miu show in which Miuccia Prada sent her models down the runway in knit boy-cut briefs that were sometimes worn over pantyhose. By the time the summer rolled around, famous and nonfamous folks alike could be seen around New York City on a random weekday rocking a pair of fashion knickers (tights optional) with aplomb. What at first was a pandemic nightmare (oh, no, I forgot to put on pants!) soon became an everyday occurrence—a classic 2023 modus operandi.

Every year a new denim silhouette rises to the top. In 2023, instead of a fresh pant width or rise length, denim skirts took over the streets. With nostalgia for the indie era of the early aughts on the rise, it would’ve been easy to assume that the denim mini worn over opaque tights or cropped leggings would become the trend du jour. Actually, it was their distant cousin, the boho maxi, that became inescapable, especially when it featured the faux-DIY triangle effect on the front hem. Once upon a time, it was a sign that the wearer had turned their own pair of jeans into a skirt. If anyone wants to try this at home, the instructions are simple: Cut open the legs of one pair, and use extra fabric from another pair of jeans to patch up the open triangular space in between.

Forget AirPods, Bring On the Giant DJ Headphones

Over on TikTok, where trends are born and die every day, one thing remained a constant: over-the-ear headphones. Even as Apple shrinks its headphones (well, now they are called earbuds) to ever-tinier sizes, young people are embracing the DJ-style headsets of the early aughts. Would that Garden State scene where Natalie Portman plays Zach Braff the Shins work the same if she had given him an in-ear headphone? No. And Gen Z knows that.

A ‘Super-Duper Soft’ Speedy Vuitton Bag by Pharrell—for Men

Before he launched his ready-to-wear vision for Louis Vuitton, Pharrell Williams unveiled something even more monumental: his take on the must-have bag. The big reveal was a campaign image starring a very pregnant Rihanna carrying a gaggle of Pharrell-ified Speedys, but the makeover wasn’t just on the surface. “If you notice, Speedys never collapse like this,” Williams explained in a Vogue video, standing next to a bag in repose, whose treated canvas he had replaced with a “super-duper soft” leather. “You gonna have to pay for it, though,” he added. Although it’s possible that the many It boys (and men) that have since been seen carrying the green version of the bag—Jackson Wang, LeBron James, and Jacob Elordi, among them—didn’t actually have to pay for it, the special croc-leather version that Pharrell has been spotted carrying around will cost you a cool mill.

Say Hello to Straight-Up Cotton Boxer Shorts

For Gen Z’ers who wanted to go pantless but couldn’t actually bring themselves to walk around in their skivvies, the men’s-cotton-boxer-short phenomenon was an unbeatable way to deal with this summer’s ungodly temperatures. It all began on (you guessed it) TikTok, where young women figured out that cotton boxers are simply cotton poplin shorts in a different context. And so account after account offered takes on how to style them and where to get the best pairs. Uniqlo’s ranked high, and so did the ones from Hommegirls—though if you wanted to go really luxe, you could pick up a pair from The Row or Bottega Veneta (the latter naturally made not from cotton but from leather).

A Pair of Maison Margiela Tabis (Please Do Not Steal)

While we’re in the TikTok universe, let’s talk about Tabis, the split-toe shoes by Maison Margiela that had been the ultimate marker of IYKYK fashion but recently crossed over into the mainstream. Earlier this year a young woman went viral on the app for detailing an online date that ended with a stolen pair of her beloved Tabis. Within days the culprit was found and the shoes were returned, but the best part of the ordeal was that our heroine got a shiny new pair of Tabi Mary Janes courtesy of Ssense. The online retailer is likely the other reason for the style’s full entry into the zeitgeist. It even recently put up giant billboards announcing, “Ssense: Where Your Pilates Instructor Gets Their Tabis.”

You can count on Jonathan Anderson to introduce an otherwise unimaginable item into the sartorial lexicon at least once a year. In 2022, he gave us the JW Anderson pigeon clutch and made balloons the most exciting motif at Loewe. This year he combined his penchant for animals and kids’ stuff when the models at his fall 2023 JW Anderson show hit the runway wearing Wellipets on their feet. As the name suggests, Wellipets are animal-themed rubber slides and boots. (They were once the shoe of choice for the young princes William and Harry.) Anderson opted for frogs as his animaux du mode and produced the cutie styles in adult sizes, which were soon spotted on both A$AP Rocky and Emily Ratajkowski. Fashion is escapism, after all.

Before You Leave the House, Take Off One Thing and Pick Up Britney Spears’s The Woman in Me

In October, Britney Spears’s long-awaited memoir, The Woman In Me, was finally published, letting the once reigning teen queen of pop air her grievances and giving her fans an opportunity to get to know her like never before. While it was everything anyone talked about for at least two weeks—shout-out to Michelle Williams’s incredible rendition of the audiobook—only one budding pop star managed to capture the moment with a pair of perfectly staged paparazzi pictures. That would be Addison Rae, who was photographed walking in Los Angeles reading the book while also carrying her phone, a can of soda, and a tiny purse that was clearly not doing its intended job. At that moment, she was the woman in all of us.

Messi’s Non–Barbie Pink Miami Jersey

Fashion’s love affair with soccer kicked up a notch or two in 2023. Last year the Argentinian Lionel Messi, arguably the best player of his generation, led his country’s team to victory at the FIFA World Cup, and in July of this year, he shocked everyone by announcing he would be joining the Inter Miami team in the United States’ Major League Soccer. (It would become less surprising to a lot of non-soccer aficionados when the Beckham documentary premiered a few months later and they found out David Beckham is part owner of the team.) Immediately following the announcement, the generic Inter Miami jersey, in an unexpected shade of un–Barbie pink, sold out, giving rise to a rich bootleg industry. Now, nearly five months later, the official Messi jersey, sporting his number 10, remains wait-listed in most sizes on the Adidas website.

And on the subject of soccer: The sneaker of the year was undoubtedly Martine Rose’s Nike Shox, which made its debut at the FIFA Women’s World Cup opening ceremony in Australia this summer with the help of the US team. Rose turned the mid-aughts Nike staple into a fashionable mule, jacked up the platform, and added dazzling color palettes of purple with blue and orange with yellow, the latter of which became impossible to miss during the spring 2024 collections.

One of the few affordable items to become a must-have piece this year, the COS quilted bag took off because of the megawatt individuals who were photographed carrying it, namely Blackpink’s Jennie Kim (who sold it out multiple times) and Shinee’s Key. But you don’t need to be a K-pop fan to be attracted to the quilted number’s squishy shape, made from leather or recycled polyester, or its practical design, which comes in three different sizes to suit every mood.

Friendship Bracelets That Never Go Out of Style

At Taylor Swift concerts, showgoers loaded up their arms with beaded friendship bracelets that they traded with fellow Swifties. The practice was born from the song “You’re On Your Own, Kid,” wherein Swift sings, “Make the friendship bracelets, take the moment, and taste it.” And so the fans made their bracelets, spelling out song names, Swiftie inside jokes, and even city- and state-specific Swift puns. The trend was all-encompassing; even celeb fans like Jennifer Lawrence and Nicole Kidman were seen wearing their fandom on their wrists.

Chanel Cat-Eye Sunglasses Fit for a Real-Life or Fake Diva

The Idol was short-lived, but it still yielded a cult-favorite song, “World Class Sinner/I’m a Freak,” and the inescapable sight of Lily-Rose Depp in Chanel’s skinny cat-eye glasses, which she wore in character as Jocelyn and on the Cannes red carpet (along with a sleek LBD by Chanel, bien sûr). The frames’ exaggerated shape was a fitting visual metaphor for a sexy icon who is losing it behind the scenes.

Among the fashion cognoscenti there was only one shoe that was absolutely necessary this year, and it was the Alaïa Mary Jane flats. The shoes, introduced by Pieter Mulier in 2022, were a slow burn at first. You’d see them but couldn’t immediately place them, which surely upped their allure. A year later they were everywhere, along with a perpetually sold-out status. The key to their appeal is simple—a tight color palette (white, black, red, silver, gold) and a sky’s-the-limit take on materials, including velvet, laser-cut leather, and even mesh embroidered with crystals. Equal parts ease and opulence, they go with just about everything in a person’s closet.

Literally Cheetos

Yes, Cheetos. The orange snack first entered the current fashion consciousness in the January issue of Vogue, where one Florence Pugh wore a decadent butter yellow Loewe dress while holding a singular Cheeto in her left hand, with the same ineffable cool that Kate Moss used to nonchalantly hold a cigarette. Then over the summer, a Collina Strada x Cheetos collab bag appeared to commemorate the snack’s 75th anniversary—a super-groovy and super-orange take on one of the bag styles seen on the brand’s spring runway. Closing out the year was Kim Kardashian on the cover of GQ wearing an oversized suit by The Row and holding with a family-size bag of Cheetos. Proof that in 2023 nothing tastes as good as orange Cheeto dust feels on your fingers.
