If you’d have told us six years ago, following the final airing and axing of the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, that it would be back and bigger than ever in 2024, we mightn’t have believed you. Nevertheless, the televised-spectacle-meets-stage show hybrid has made its much-discussed return for the first time since 2018 after a hiatus. Aside from involving the biggest models of the moment, it also involves former runway ‘Angels’ like Tyra Banks and Adriana Lima, and performances from superstars Tyla, Lisa from Blackpink, and Cher (who also walked the pink carpet outside).
For the uninitiated, the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show (commonly abbreviated to ‘VSFS’) first aired on television in 1995 as a way of promoting the American lingerie brand, incorporating the biggest models of the moment—Naomi Campbell, Doutzen Kroes and Gisele Bündchen among them, and later, Kendall Jenner, Joan Smalls, Gigi and Bella Hadid, and more. Models walked the televised runway show in specialised versions of the brand’s lingerie for 23 years, and the cultural capital of the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show grew exponentially. That was until the show was cancelled following declining ratings in 2018, which coincided with sizeist and transphobic remarks made in an interview by former chief marketing officer Ed Razek; following significant media attention, he apologised on social media and resigned from the brand in 2019.
Since then, Victoria’s Secret—still one of America’s most popular lingerie brands with significant global reach—has shifted to size-inclusive casting and incorporating of gender-diverse models in its campaigns, which have existed in the place of a physical runway. Meanwhile, some said that Rihanna’s Savage x Fenty show, which evolved in the VSFS’s hiatus years, put forward a more modern idea of what a lingerie runway show should look like.
It’s a different time, but now, the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is back—and its evolved version is creating just as much excitement, and conversation, as before. Before this year’s runway, there has been speculation about whether 2024’s offering will be different from the past, or the same as it was.
Now that the show has happened, speculation is now over. At the 2024 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, we saw some of the biggest models in fashion make their first walks on the fabled runway in New York, from new faces to the established Angels, who have more comprehensive contracts with the brand. Keep reading for the new models to know who walked the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show runway for the first time this year.
