K-pop legend CL is set to perform in Hong Kong with 2NE1 after a 10-year hiatus. Ahead of the iconic girl group’s December concert in this city, she brings her signature queen-like charisma to the cover of Vogue Hong Kong’s December issue.
Over the years, CL’s music, stage presence, and fashion have continually evolved. Now, she takes the stage with even greater confidence and ease, inspiring others to embrace themselves just as she does. Reflecting on performing with 2NE1 again and the excitement of reuniting with fans in Hong Kong, CL said she plans to savor every moment, “I hope my music can help people embrace their unique individuality.” This belief has always been at the core of CL’s artistry, and her bold sense of style is the perfect proof.
You’re known for your bold and avant-garde sense of style. Could you describe your personal style and how it has evolved over the years?
I’ve always been drawn to bright and eye-catching fashion. Sometimes, more understated looks actually feel like a bigger challenge for me! Ever since I can remember, I’ve been collecting dramatic, statement pieces, even before I had the opportunity to wear them. Fashion has always been my way of expressing myself. My style leans toward bold and extravagant, but when I’m rehearsing or preparing for something casual, I prefer to keep it simple and comfortable. I also enjoy mixing vintage and menswear. The key is blending different aesthetics to create something truly unique. As for how my style has evolved, the essence of what I want to communicate through fashion hasn’t changed. But over time, I’ve come to understand what truly works for me. In the past, I’d take more risks with my looks, but now I feel like I’ve found a more refined and personal way of expressing myself through fashion.
Your style is ever-changing, whether on stage or in everyday life. Where do you find inspiration for your looks?
In the past, I spent a lot of time studying different designers and following trends. Fashion has always been a passion of mine. But now, my style is more aligned with my lifestyle and the things I’ve experienced. It’s no longer just about choosing outfits for a performance or event but about the moment I’m in. I find a lot of inspiration in everyday life, the songs I’m creating, and the places I’ve been. My style has naturally evolved into something more organic and personal.
Are there any designers or brands that particularly inspire you at the moment?
I’ve always had a deep admiration for timeless, classic designers. I’m especially inspired by Alaïa, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Karl Lagerfeld. Their work possesses a quality that transcends trends and stands the test of time. I’m drawn to designers and brands that embody that sense of enduring elegance.
When you’re conceptualising and designing stage outfits, what’s the most important element for you?
Music is always the most crucial factor for me. A song itself determines the energy and vibe of the outfit. My clothing has to allow me to move freely, especially when I’m dancing or performing. The interaction between the music and the outfit is key. I also consider the location of the performance—the aesthetic, colors, and even the season of the place. Every detail matters when creating a cohesive visual narrative that aligns with the music.
Recently, you reunited with 2NE1 after 10 years to hold a concert together. How did it feel to return to the stage as a group?
Honestly, I didn’t even realize it had been 10 years! Time flies, especially since I’ve been busy with performances and other projects. Reuniting with the members was incredibly meaningful! Performing together again felt so natural, and the energy was incredible. This concert was significant for all of us, and I’m savouring every moment of it. We truly cherish this opportunity to come together again.
Were there any particularly unforgettable moments during the concerts?
What stood out to me the most was seeing our fans again after so many years. Even though time has passed, I still recognize them, and their passion and energy in welcoming us back moved me deeply. Singing songs we performed years ago feels completely different now. There are some songs I didn’t feel as strongly about before, but now they resonate with me on a much deeper level. It’s like experiencing these songs all over again—it’s both exciting and emotional.
Your music is often described as powerful, confident, and strong. What kind of impact do you hope your work will have on the younger generation?
For me, how people feel when they listen to music is the most important thing. Even if it’s the same song, everyone interprets it in their own unique way, and that’s the beauty of it. Music has the power to evoke emotions—whether it’s joy, excitement, or inspiration. In today’s music industry, many songs don’t rely on lyrics, and that’s okay because what truly matters is how the music makes you feel. If my music can inspire people, boost their confidence, or give them energy—whether it’s during their morning routine or while working out—that’s what I hope for. I want my music to help people embrace their unique individuality.
You’re currently on tour with 2NE1 performing across 12 cities, including Hong Kong and Macau. Is there anything you’d like to say to your fans in Hong Kong?
I’ve been to Hong Kong many times, but it’s been a while since I’ve visited with 2NE1, so I’m really excited to reunite with our fans there. Hong Kong always has this incredible energy, and the fans are so passionate. I’m looking forward to sharing that energy with them and I hope they’re ready to enjoy this experience to the fullest. It’s been quite some time since we’ve performed in Hong Kong, so I know it’s going to be a special moment for all of us.
Is there anything special you’re looking forward to doing while you’re in Hong Kong?
Absolutely. I’ve always been inspired by Hong Kong’s creativity and style. The city’s fashion industry is thriving, and I’m lucky to have met so many talented people in the fashion world here. The architecture, the colours, the people—it all comes together to create an atmosphere that really sparks my creativity. Every time I visit, I leave inspired and full of new ideas.
