Today, the fashion world said its final goodbye to the late Karl Lagerfeld, whose last Chanel collection – Autumn/Winter 2019 – showed at Paris Fashion Week. The Grand Palais was transformed into a winter village, complete with snow, wooden chalets, and mountain landscapes to provide the setting for the most anticipated show of the season, upholding Lagerfeld’s legacy of fantastical runways which saw a spectacular beach scene for Spring/Summer 2019.

This Ready-to-Wear collection, entitled “Chanel in the Snow,” opened with Cara Delevingne in a lavish ensemble of houndstooth, chevron and checker print tweed. Different variations of these mixed prints appeared on elegant silhouettes defined by long coats, broad collars, and wide-leg pants. The classic neutral palette transitioned into a punchy sequence of puffer jackets in bright pink, aqua, purples and reds, before returning to a crisp white and black segment, reminiscent of Lagerfeld’s own uniform, that closed with Penelope Cruz and Kaia Gerber in dreamy fur dresses.

The emotional finale was met with a standing ovation as models in tears walked down the runway in unison. It was a final adieu to fashion’s most legendary designer, but a nod to the words “the beat goes on…,” which appeared on the event invitation alongside an illustration of Karl Lagerfeld, hand-in-hand with Coco Chanel.
