As self-isolation becomes key in slowing the spreading of COVID-19, many musicians are now using their platforms to inspire and entertain their followers who may be stuck at home—by putting on live performances for them. Top artists such as John Legend, Pink, and Chris Martin have taken to their Instagram Lives this week to put on special mini acoustic sets for their fans, all of which you can witness from the comfort of your living room or bedroom. (These social media concerts follow in the footsteps of institutions such as The Metropolitan Opera, which also begun live-streaming performances this week.)
Highlights thus far include the singer Pink, who shared a piano session yesterday, during which she performed her take on Adele’s ballad “Make You Feel My Love.” Lizzo has led a mass meditation. John Legend and Coldplay’s Chris Martin both partook in the #TogetherAtHome concerts series yesterday; Legend’s performance ran for almost an hour, and featured appearances from his wife Chrissy Teigen and two children Luna and Miles, who listened nearby. Legend plans to continue these sets, and called on Miguel and Charlie Puth to join in for his next one.
Miley Cyrus has also begun a daily “Bright Minded” live stream that focuses on “how to stay LIT in dark times.” While Cyrus has yet to perform musically on the livestream, she did invite fellow popstar Demi Lovato to appear on today’s edition. The two discussed their renewed relationship and dealing with body image issues.
Meanwhile, Rufus Wainwright also announced yesterday that he will be recording one song a day until the end of coronavirus isolation, kicking it off with a piano rendition of the song “Grey Gardens.” He wrote, “In these dire times, I want to share some music with you all from the warmth and comfort of our home in Los Angeles. . . We have to stay positive and I feel that music and art are a large part of what gets us through times like these.”
