The 43rd Hong Kong Film Awards will soon be held on April 27, and its nominations have just been announced. This year’s Hong Kong films have delivered exceptional results.
The Last Dance is the first in Hong Kong’s film history to cover the subject of funeral services in the city. Apart from its pioneering theme, it also became the highest-grossing film ever in Hong Kong. At this year’s Awards, it received 18 nominations including Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor and Actress, and Being Supporting Actor and Actress — making it the film with the most nominations this year.
Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In follows with 14 nominations. It was not only the talk of the town, but it was also screened at the ‘Midnight Screenings’ during the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. It also became the highest-grossing Hong Kong movie in Japanese cinema.
Other notable mentions include Papa which received 11 nominations including Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Actor. Following her Golden Horse Awards win, Chung Suet Ying clinched a Best Actress nomination again for The Way We Talk. Michelle Wai is widely lauded for her performance in The Last Dance and also made it to the list of Best Actress nominees, going against Natalie Hsu for Last Song For You, Hedwig Tam for Montages Of A Modern Motherhood, and Patra Au Ga Man for All Shall Be Well.
