When the HBO gods close a door, somewhere they open a window: Big Little Lies has returned for its second season, mercifully filling the Game of Thrones–shaped hole in our Sunday nights. The season premiere began in a familiar place (oh, “Cold Little Heart,” how we’ve missed you!): It’s the first day at Otter Bay School, and the Monterey Five are reunited—and far friendlier this time. We’re quickly caught up to speed: The children are slightly older, Ziggy and Chloe’s taste in music is still impeccable, and Renata’s (Laura Dern) power suiting is on point.
There’s one notable addition to the group, however: Perry’s mother, played by none other than Meryl Streep. There has been much speculation about Streep’s character, and the three-time Academy Award–winning actress did not disappoint. Streep (dressed in a wig and fake teeth that rival Rami Malek’s in Bohemian Rhapsody) delivered one of the most memorable moments from the premiere: a bloodcurdling scream to mourn the death of her son. Ah, the catharsis of screaming into the void! There’s a lot to love about Big Little Lies, and thankfully the Internet is here for every meme- and GIFable moment. Take a look at the best below.
