Sky beyond words by Ryo Matsuoka, WKM Gallery

Japanese artist Ryo Matsuoka has long been recognised for his bold and unrestrained style, having lent his artistic talents to the likes of Louis Vuitton and JOYCE Hong Kong for their retail spaces, and even Yohji Yamamoto for a menswear collection back in 2004. Now he returns to the city for his second exhibition with WKM Gallery, Sky beyond words. At the gallery’s Wong Chuk Hang address, Matsuoka’s works inject life and colour into the otherwise naked space. Through a conjoined collection of nine embroidered textile works sprawled across two walls and a series of multi-sized linen canvases, the artist embarks on an abstract exploration of human emotions. Much like the explosive feelings of happiness, enthusiasm, and anxiety, Matsuoka’s pieces take on vastly unpredictable forms, producing layers upon layers of tactile colour for viewers to dissect.

First Contact by Robin Huang and TOS Suntos, Gallery by the Harbour

Untitled by TOS SUNTOS

Untitled by TOS SUNTOS

Aptly named, First Contact marks the first collaborative exhibition by contemporary Thai artist TOS Suntos and emerging Taiwanese artist Robin Huang. Both influenced by environmental culture to differing degrees, the two creatives come together for an artistic exploration of civilisation through themes of peace, faith, weaponry, plant and animal life. Backed by melancholic copiapoa-inspired characters in states of gloomy anticipation, Huang’s army of charming ceramics stare into the seemingly tech-infused world of TOS’ three-eyed beings, which glow with a highly rendered sci-fi quality achieved purely through paint. The exhibition comes to a crescendo with a 6.5 metre-tall poster, the two artists’ first collaborative artwork. First Contact also debuts two limited-edition art toys each designed by Huang and TOS, as well as a range of themed merchandise for visitors to shop.
