In March, when Adam Driver and Lady Gaga posed for a behind-the-scenes photo against the backdrop of the snowy Aosta valley in Italy, both clad in winter wear, underneath read a simple caption: “Signore e Signora Gucci”. It’s safe to say that the combination of events – Kylo Ren and Mother Monster pictured together with the hinting nod to fashion history, propelled a mild uproar amongst fans.
The photo (along with its accompanying look of ’90s ski opulence), as it turns out, was taken for the filming of House of Gucci. Directed by Ridley Scott, House of Gucci is an upcoming biopic about the tempestuous marriage between Maurizio Gucci, the one-time head of the luxury fashion house, and Patricia Reggiani. Milanese media of the late ’90s crowned the pair Italy’s first celebrity power couple – on par with Cobain and Love and the freshly resurrected Bennifer, so when their love story took a turn for the worse, a murder-in-the-foyer level worst with Reggiani as the prime suspect, its subsequent trial captivated the public, exploding like a soap-opera of scandal, excess wealth and crying infidelity.
This November, in vein to the popular miniseries The Assassination of Gianni Versace, the crime saga’s Hollywood treatment will renew interest in the glamourous lives of Reggiani, her husband, and the House of Gucci. Here’s everything we know about the movie so far.
Who will star in House Of Gucci?
With Lady Gaga coming off from her Academy-award nominated role as Ally in A Star Is Born, the artist-turned-actress will play Patricia Reggiani, the scorned Gucci wife also known as Vedova Nera – the Black Widow. Her co-star, Adam Driver plays Maurizio Gucci who oversaw the family business during a period when the brand’s finances were in the red, before selling his majority stake in return for a lot of money. Beyond the two, the film’s celebrity-studded cast also included Al Pacino as Maurizio’s uncle, Aldo Gucci and a barely recognizable Jared Leto covered in prosthetics for the role of Paolo Gucci. Additionally, Camille Cottin plays Maurizio’s mistress denoting that this film may well be a lover’s war. Jeremy Iron play’s Maurizio’s father Rudolfo Gucci.
What is the plot of House Of Gucci?
All the trappings of high-fashion true crime will of course ensue, but House Of Gucci’s tragic tale is variegated with much more than its conventional tropes. For starters, the story surrounded an exuberant fashion label at the time helmed by a couple notorious for enjoying the tonier things in life. “We were a beautiful couple and we had a beautiful life,” Regianni remarked in a 2016 profile. But behind the lavish parties and private island trips, both the pair’s relationship and Gucci’s business were quickly imploding. Gucci tired of his wife and her meddling management while the businessman himself was tearing down his heritage brand with expensive visions the company could not execute. The collapse began when Maurizio claimed to be away for business only for Reggiani to find out he had left her (and their family) for a younger woman. And with the company’s failing finances, ownership of the Gucci label fell into the hands of Dominico de Sole and a young Tom Ford.
Maurizio Gucci’s murder occurred one fateful morning in 1995 on the red-carpeted entrance of his office. Immediately Reggiani was a suspect but the crime went unsolved for two years until an informant came forward, having heard the night porter gleefully boast about recruiting Gucci’s hitman during a stay one night at a one-star hotel. Sentenced to a 26-year stay at the Vittore Residence – what Reggiani dubbed her incarceration, Reggiani now resides in Milan, her life forever a fixture for entertainment.

Already, the fashion looks are creating a frenzied rupture on the Internet. Lady Gaga was spotted on set in several height-of-wealth looks, as photographers capture her in a vintage Burberry plaid look, a red wrap dress, and a sable fur coat.
What does the Gucci family have to say about its history being depicted for the big screen?
Looks like the real House Of Gucci isn’t too pleased. “We are truly disappointed. I speak on behalf of the family,” Maurizio Gucci’s second cousin Patrizia told The Associated Press.“They are stealing the identity of a family to make a profit, to increase the income of the Hollywood system…Our family has an identity, privacy. We can talk about everything. but there is a borderline that cannot be crossed.”
