Apart from the monkeys that swing between the dipping palm trees, life at Villa Magnolia goes slow. And this is the way owner Corina Larpin and her husband like it, breaking from their otherwise busy schedules in faster-paced Hong Kong, from where Corina runs jewellery brand Stefere. “The place is very special – there’s an energy here,” says Corina of this peaceful stretch of Danang’s coastline, flanked by a rich, green junglescape. “Here, I find the right balance between work and family life. I love the fact that the beach is only five steps away, so I spend my mornings walking on the beach, or swimming in the sea, to refresh my mind and start the day right.”

The traditional Vietnamese beach house is in harmony with its surroundings – a vision upheld by renowned architect and interior designer Bill Bensley, who worked exclusively with local Vietnamese artisans to ensure this was the case. Every piece of furniture was made bespoke, with “artisans helping to bring Bill’s vision to life,” says Corina. The materials are natural, with exposed wooden beams and floorboards, weaved-bamboo walls, and luxe marble bathrooms. Shell-adorned sculptures reflect the seashore outside. Indoors and out blend seamlessly, with the three minimalist bedrooms – all wood and white linens – opening out onto terraces with daybeds upholstered in sea-green and -blue fabrics. Similarly, the double-height dining room – with its grand wooden pillars – benefits from doors that retract from the decking outside, where a stripe-tiled infinity pool basks in a sea breeze from its elevated position. “Bill believes in minimal intervention, and so, even when I’m inside the house, I feel connected to nature.”

While the villa was built and the interiors designed before Corina and her husband bought it, they soon put their touch on the place, eager to begin entertaining here. Additional construction work included building a soundproof wall between the bedrooms and bathrooms (formerly open-plan), “so as to be able to sing in the shower without disturbing anyone,” says Corina. To the decor, the couple also introduced pieces from their art collection, which has helped add warmth to the large-scale rooms.

It’s no wonder that, as well as being here to enjoy time with family and friends, Corina visits to feel inspired as a jewellery designer, by “the Vietnamese architecture, art, culture and food,” that is reflected by her home and the nearby ancient city of Hội An. “I spend my days on the beach, working on new pieces, or walking around Hội An,” Corina says, who has begun work on her Oscars jewellery collection, following the success of 2019’s Met Gala, for which her jewels were worn by singer Cardi B. “For this, I need a few days in Danang, to charge my creative powers. Every red carpet event is a big challenge, because all the top jewellers will be giving their best. It is a very important time of year for Stefere.”

For each of Corina’s collections, and the subsequent fanfare, there is a design process that requires of her the space and time to reflect and be inspired, and it is this home-away-from-home that provides that. “This is the perfect place to relax and disconnect completely from a busy life in a city like Hong Kong,” says Corina.
