Most memorable Hong Kong moment.
I grew up on Lamma Island so the daily ferry commute has been indelibly burned into my brain. It was a time for me to hang out with my friends on the way to school and then, later in life, a place to catch up with mates with a beer on the way back from work. It’s the perfect buffer between island life and work life.
Favourite restaurants.
In no particular order – Tsui Wah, Crystal Jade, and this congee spot on Queens Road Central I’ve been going since I was a little girl.
Unmissable markets.
I love rambling around Fa Yuen street in Mong Kok. If you’re looking for a slice of old Hong Kong this is it. Pick up some bargain clothes and a stick of curried fish balls whilst you explore.
Where to stay.
Don’t get a hotel get an Airbnb – it’s the best way of getting to know a city. Sai Ying Pun and Shek Tong Tsui would be good areas to check out.
Best date.
I find activities take the pressure out of dates so hiking the Dragon’s Back would be a good option, plus you’re rewarded with a beach and Thai food at the end of it.
Best place for a drink.
One of my favourites is still, and always will be, Club 71. It’s relaxed, casual and consistently a great place to catch up with friends.
A great spot for shopping.
Sham Shui Po! If you’re a maker like me it’s heaven. You can literally find anything and everything you could possibly ever need for any crafting project in those streets. I make a point of spending a day there every time I’m in Hong Kong.
Most mind-blowing view.
From the top of my old home at 30 Magazine Gap Road. It had a panoramic view of Hong Kong harbour, looking across to Kowloon. The best view in the world!
The city’s best-kept secret.
Maybe not so much of a secret anymore but I am a devotee of Me & George. This no-frills thrift shop has several outlets across Hong Kong and is a great place to pick up an unusual one-off.
