Earlier this year, rumours of a new girl group under South Korean entertainment agency The Black Label began swirling around the internet, all thanks to a series of rehearsal room photos that showed a group of too-cool-for-school girls trainees—the alleged members of the rumoured group. Fast forward to today, the group has finally been announced and is slowly unveiling its members. Here’s everything we know about MEOVV so far, from speculations to hard facts.

MEOVV has dropped their debut single “MEOW”

MEOVV has officially released their first single and of course, it’s called “MEOW”. The track arrives with a music video that sees the members rocking an undeniably cool-girl wardrobe made up of baggy cargo denim, Chanel chains, edgy black leather, and sporty “blokecore” essentials. Fierce feline energy is through the roof as the girls sing “Meowww… We don’t run, we don’t chase ’em”, throwing in subtle cat ears and claws into simple yet impactful jazz funk choreography. “MEOW” is K-pop girl crush through and through.

MEOVV has 5 members

On August 16, The Black Label took to Instagram to officially announce the arrival of MEOVV. The news came with a trailer showing five black cats perched atop the The Black Label headquarters in Hannam-dong, and a tag for the MEOVV Instagram account. The group has now pulled back the curtain on all its members: Ella Gross—a former child model who rose to online fame for her beauty and striking resemblance to Blackpink’s Jennie—Gawon Lee, Sooin, Anna and Narin.

K-pop fans have long been theorising about the full the lineup, with 20-year-old Korean-American dance prodigy and choreographer Bailey Sok among the most highly anticipated after her appearance in the viral trainee photo. She’s already made her name in the K-pop sphere for her work with Red Velvet, Aespa, Taemin, and Kai, so if she’s not debuting as a member of MEOVV, perhaps she’ll be working her magic as their choreographer. Fingers crossed!

The Black Label was founded by renowned Korean producers Teddy Park and Kush, the brains behind some of Blackpink, 2NE1 and Taeyang’s biggest hits. Now home to K-pop artists like Jeon Somi and Blackpink’s Rosé, the agency first launched in 2015 and is an associate company of Hallyu giant YG Entertainment. In February, The Black Label announced plans to debut its very first K-pop group and by April had filed a copyright trademark for the name MEOVV.
