In January, Sarah Jessica Parker took to Instagram and posted a 40-second video that featured different everyday scenes of New York. Below, she wrote: “I couldn’t help but wonder… where are they now? X, SJ”. And in the caption was an unfamiliar tag, @JustLikeThatMax . It didn’t take long for devoted Sex and the City fans to realise that, after almost 17 years since the airing of the original series finale, their favourite TV series is back.
Titled And Just Like That, a 10-episode Sex and the City reboot is headed to HBO Max , starring members of the original cast and plenty of fresh faces. Although no official release date has been announced, HBO posted the revival series’ first trailer last week, a sign that filming is well underway. As we prepare to welcome back one of the most iconic TV shows from the 90s, here is everything you need to know about this legendary reboot.
First things first, is the iconic girl squad back together?
Yes and no. Only three quarters of the Sex and the City quartet are confirmed to return for And Just Like That: Sarah Jesica Parker as Carrie Bradshaw, Cynthia Nixon as Miranda Hobbes, and Kristin Davis as Charlotte York Goldenblatt. The three actors have also signed on as executive producers for the revival series, promising a spin-off that will stay loyal to the original characters we all adore. To many people’s dismay, Kim Cattrall will not be returning as feisty fan-favourite Samantha Jones.
Will someone else play Samantha?
The character of Samantha Jones will not return to the revival series at all.
In February 2021, HBO Max chief content officer Casey Bloys told TV Line, “Just as in real life, people come into your life, people leave. Friendships fade, and new friendships start. So I think it is all very indicative of the real stages, the actual stages of life…. They’re trying to tell an honest story about being a woman in her 50s in New York. So it should all feel somewhat organic, and the friends that you have when you’re 30, you may not have when you’re 50.”
That being said, there has been no information as to how the absence of Samantha will be addressed in the new storyline.
Who else will return?
There wouldn’t be Carrie Bradshaw without Mr. Big, who will be reprised by Chris Noth. Evan Handler will also return as Charlotte’s husband Harry Goldenblatt, and David Eigenberg as Miranda’s husband Steve Hobbes. John Corbett and Bridget Moynahan will be back as Carrie and Big’s exes, Aidan and Natasha, respectively, leaving fans wondering what will happen next between the on-and-off couple.
Mario Cantone will return as Stanford’s boo Anthony, and while Willie Garson was able to return as Carrie’s gay best friend Stanford, the actor passed away on September 21 2021 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. We may be able to see him in the series’ first episodes, but we don’t know whether his death will be addressed in the revival.

Who is slated to appear beyond the returning original actors?
Tony-award winning actress Sara Ramírez, best known for her role as Dr. Callie Torres in sensational medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, will play non-binary, queer stand-up comedian Che Diaz, who hosts a podcast that regularly features Carrie.

Sarita Choudhury, previously seen in Homeland, will play single and self-made Manhattan real estate broker Seema Patel.

Charlotte and Miranda’s children will also return, all grown up! Lily and Rose Goldenblatt will be played by Cathy Ang and Alexa Swinton respectively, and Brady Hobbes will be played by Niall Cunningham.
What will the reboot be about?
The reboot is described as an entirely “new chapter” in HBO’s official synopsis. Rather than picking up from where the original series finale left off, And Just Like That will follow Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte as they navigate the complications of life and friendship as women in their 50s.
Set in 2021, many might be wondering whether the new series will include all the lavish parties and glamorous girl’s night outs that made Sex and the City the iconic show that it is. Parker pointed out to Vanity Fair that the pandemic will be addressed in the new show. “[Covid-19 will] obviously be part of the storyline, because that’s the city [these characters] live in. And how has that changed relationships once friends disappear? I have great faith that the writers are going to examine it all,” said the actor and executive producer.
How long will the reboot be?
And Just Like That will comprise 10 episodes, each 30 minutes long in duration.
When will the series drop?
The series will drop in December!
Who is behind the outfits?
Unfortunately, Patricia Field will not be returning as the show’s stylist due to clashes with her work for Season Two of Darren Star’s other project, Emily in Paris. The costume design baton has been passed down to her trusted colleague, Molly Rogers, who has actually worked alongside Field on Sex and the City from the very beginning.
Parker has recently been spotted in a new iteration of Carrie Bradshaw’s signature tutu on set, so it seems like all the Sex and the City fashion lovers are in for a treat!
The most important question: what will happen to Carrie and Big?
While there have been rumours that Carrie and Big will part ways in the new series, HBO’s latest trailer shows the two sharing a passionate kiss, indicating that they are still very much in love. Both the characters’ exes are returning though, so we’ll just have to wait and see why.
