Song Hye Kyo’s latest work is the occult horror film, Dark Nuns. Set to premiere in Hong Kong this Thursday, the movie centers around two nuns who make it their mission to save a young boy who has been possessed by an evil spirit. Song’s gripping performance as Sister Junia was not without challenges—most notably the exorcism scene, which she touches on in an exclusive interview with Vogue Hong Kong.

Ah, the role that truly started it all. While Song had appeared in numerous roles in various television dramas and sitcoms, it wasn’t until she was cast in Autumn in My Heart that she rose to fame in Korea and eventually established her enduring status as a Hallyu star. Packed with emotional twists and turns from start to finish (babies switched at birth, secret affairs, fatal diseases, you name it), the romantic melodramatic series is often regarded as the pioneer of Korean melodramas and the driving force behind the global Hallyu phenomenon.

The Glory (2022-2023)

There’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that The Glory gave us Song’s best on-screen performance to date. Playing the vengeful Moon Dong-eun in this psychological Netflix thriller launched the actress into renewed global fame and earned her the title of Best Actress at the 59th Baeksang Arts Awards, kickstarting a brand new chapter in Song’s career. If there’s one Song Hye Kyo series to watch, it’s this.

Full House (2004)

A certified K-drama classic, Full House led the way for the romantic comedy genre in Korean television. In the series, Song plays the bubbly Han Ji-eun, an aspiring screenwriter who jets off for the vacation of a lifetime only to return to find her house has been sold to famous actor Lee Young-jae, played by Rain. Without spoiling it for you, the two are complete opposites who are forced to live together despite their differences, and the story follows the complicated evolution of this strange relationship.

Encounter (2018-2019)

Song Hye Kyo and Park Bo-gum—what more could one want? In this romantic melodrama, Song dips her toes into the Noona-Dongsaeng (older female-younger guy) trope as she plays the role of a hotel CEO who falls for a new public relations recruit. The couple encounter obstacle after obstacle, but love truly conquers all.

Descendants of the Sun (2016)

Descendants of the Sun was my introduction to Song’s acting career. In it, she stars as Kang Mo-yeon, a diligent surgeon who chances upon love with a special forces officer. The opposing philosophies of their respective jobs cause a riff between them, but even in the midst of harrowing circumstances, some things are just meant to be.
