In a nutshell:
The nostalgia-laden sci-fi sensation starring Millie Bobby Brown as the telekinetic teenager Eleven returned with the first seven episodes of its action-packed fourth season in May. Now, the second volume is on its way.
Has a release date been confirmed for Stranger Things season 4: volume 2?
Yes. On 17 February, Netflix announced that, unlike the previous instalments of Stranger Things, season four would be split into two parts, with volume one set to debut on 27 May and volume two on 1 July. In an open letter to fans, the show’s creators, the Duffer brothers, explained that this was because of the fourth season’s unprecedented length and would help to get episodes out to viewers as soon as possible. “With nine scripts, over 800 pages, almost two years of filming, thousands of visual effects shots and a runtime nearly twice the length of any previous season, Stranger Things 4 was the most challenging season yet, but also the most rewarding one,” they wrote. “Everyone involved is incredibly proud of the results, and we can’t wait to share it with you.”
What will the Stranger Things season 4: volume 2 cast look like?
Fan favourites Millie Bobby Brown (Eleven), Finn Wolfhard (Mike), Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin), Caleb McLaughlin (Lucas), Noah Schnapp (Will), Sadie Sink (Max), Natalia Dyer (Nancy), Charlie Heaton (Jonathan), Joe Keery (Steve), Maya Hawke (Robin), Winona Ryder (Joyce Byers), David Harbour (Jim Hopper) and Priah Ferguson (Erica) will all return. So too will Eduardo Franco’s Argyle, the lovable stoner; Joseph Quinn’s Hellfire Club captain Eddie; Tom Wlaschiha’s brooding Russian prison guard Dmitri; and Brett Gelman’s excitable conspiracy theorist Murray.
What can we expect from Stranger Things season 4: volume 2?
Volume one of season four ended with some significant revelations but also left many questions unanswered. For instance, we learned that – spoiler alert – Vecna is, in fact, Victor Creel’s son Henry who was later placed in the care of Dr Martin Brenner, became subject 001 in his experiments, and befriended Eleven as a lab worker. However, it wasn’t clear if recalling her memories of him helped Eleven get her powers back, or if Nancy was able to escape the Upside Down which Vecna had dragged her into. And will Mike, Will, Jonathan and Argyle manage to track down Eleven? And how on earth will Joyce, Hopper and Murray return to the US?
Plot details for the upcoming two episodes in volume two, titled “Papa” and “The Piggyback”, are being kept under wraps, though clues can be found in the first images from the second instalment released on 14 June. One shows Eddie talking Lucas, Erica, Robin, Steve, Dustin and Nancy through a well-thumbed book, making it clear that the latter has emerged from the Upside Down. Others feature Eleven and Dr Brenner in the secure facility; Lucas and Max in a dimly-lit room; Robin, Steve and Eddie driving in an overcast Hawkins; Argyle, Will, Mike and Jonathan driving through the desert; and Dmitri, Murray, Joyce and Hopper staring confusedly at something off camera.
Is there a trailer for Stranger Things season 4: volume 2?
Not yet, though Netflix did release a sneak peek for volume two on 9 June. In the 30-second clip, we see a young Eleven gazing into the gate she’s created while Vecna growls, “It’s over. You have freed me.” Then, Dr Brenner examines the damage before the camera cuts to Robin, Nancy and Steve in the Upside Down. We also get glimpses of Dustin and Lucas looking terrified, Hopper and Murray examining an otherworldly monster in a tank, a giant explosion and someone levitating, suggesting that Vecna has found yet another victim.
Will there be a fifth season of Stranger Things?
Yes! On 17 February, Netflix announced that Stranger Things would end with season five. “Seven years ago, we planned out the complete story arc for Stranger Things,” the Duffer brothers said in their statement. “At the time, we predicted the story would last four to five seasons. It proved too large to tell in four but – as you’ll see for yourselves – we are now hurtling towards our finale.”
But, there’s some hope for those who want to see more of the universe the Duffers have created. “There are still many more exciting stories to tell within the world of Stranger Things: new mysteries, new adventures, new unexpected heroes,” they added, leaving the door open to a sequel or spinoff series. “But first, we hope that you stay with us as we finish this tale of a powerful girl named Eleven and her brave friends, of a broken police chief and a ferocious mum, of a small town called Hawkins and an alternate dimension known only as the Upside Down.”
