Taylor Swift is going back to her acoustic roots. Taking to Instagram, the Easter Egg queen revealed that she had secretly written Folklore – her eighth studio album – during lockdown, and would be dropping it in full at midnight.

“Most of the things I had planned this summer didn’t end up happening, but there is something I hadn’t planned on that DID happen,” she captioned a series of photographs of herself alone in the woods. “And that thing is my 8th studio album, Folklore. Before this year I probably would’ve overthought when to release this music at the ‘perfect’ time, but the times we’re living in keep reminding me that nothing is guaranteed. My gut is telling me that if you make something you love, you should just put it out into the world. That’s the side of uncertainty I can get on board with.”

The record features a number of intriguing musical collaborations – with The National’s Aaron Dessner co-writing and producing 11 of its 16 songs, and Bon Iver appearing on a track named “Exile”. Jack Antonoff, who has worked with the “Lover” songstress on her last three albums, again served as a producer. Swift also revealed the full track list – with song titles ranging from “The Last Great American Dynasty” to “My Tears Ricochet” and “Mad Woman”, with a bonus track, “The Lakes”, available on the physical deluxe editions.

And if that wasn’t enough to send Swifties into a frenzy? The Grammy winner will also be dropping the music video for the album’s first single, “Cardigan”, tonight – which she wrote, directed, and even styled herself due to lockdown restrictions.
