Art meets fashion in serendipity through Xu Bing for Shanghai Tang, a new, cross-disciplinary collaboration between the renowned Chinese artist and the Hong Kong-based luxury retailer to celebrate its 25 years of heritage and a new milestone in Chinese art and design.
Shanghai Tang’s ‘Created by Chinese’ vision takes form through an exclusive artwork created by Xu Bing, whose internationally-lauded works have exhibited at the likes of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the British Museum in London. The Beijing creative employs his ingenious Square Word Calligraphy to highlight Shanghai Tang’s modern, disruptive take on Chinese culture shared through a global vision.
Invented the same year Shanghai Tang was born, Xu Bing’s Square Word Calligraphy breaks down cultural barriers in an artistic system that renders English to resemble Chinese characters. In doing so, the artist invites audiences to decipher a new form of communication in the same way Shanghai Tang interprets Chinese heritage through vibrant designs and witty storytelling.
The original artwork ‘Shanghai Tang – Created by Chinese’ by Xu Bing will be exhibited at Shanghai Tang’s Flagship Store in Hong Kong at Duddell Street on 25 October 2019.
