Neon
Neon roots and punkish hair pierced the Autumn/Winter 2020 runways with retro vim. At Dries Van Noten, stylist Sam McKnight channeled the maximalist imagery of the ‘80s and created neon swathes of colour by laying fuchsia or electric yellow feathers down with hairspray. At Alexander McQueen, Guido Palau streaked hair with bright red extensions wrapped around the scalp to create a “sophisticated, dangerous, and quite couture vibe” that complimented the colour palette of the clothes. At Louis Vuitton, slicked-back orange hair added to the retrofuturistic theme and animated colours of the collection.
Hair Accessories
Bows, headbands, and scarves created an instant mood out of natural locks. At Dior, almost every look was topped off with a ‘70s-style printed headscarf, which was worn like a bandana over smoothed out hair for a soft rock feel. Elsewhere, sleek black ribbons and jewelled clips decked the crowns at Chanel and Giambattista Valli, giving slightly undone chignons a girlish charm.
Retro Waves
At Chloè, Guido Palau put a chic twist on ‘70s French girl hair by pairing strong, sculptural waves with soft texture, while at Miu Miu, he channeled the codes of glamour of the ‘40s and ‘50s with sculptural waves that framed the face at the front, while keeping the lengths loose for a touch of rebellion. At Lanvin, softer coifs swept to the side emphasised body and movement.
Pin Straight
Poker straight hair with blunt ends and a combed back crown sharpened powerful looks at Prada, mirroring the movement of the fringed clothing. At Missoni, shiny, smooth lengths with middle parts exuded natural elegance, while similarly sleek strands were tucked behind the ears at Ferragamo, keeping the hair out of the models’ faces.
Sculptural Heights
At the more avant-garde end of the spectrum, at Haider Ackermann, hairstylist Duffy sculpted bulbous, alien-like buns on top of models’ heads, completing the look with slicked-down spiky fringes. At Moschino, sky-high and candy-coloured hair poufs Marie Antoinette-style elevated a whimsical show, while woven braided crowns at Fendi gave just a touch of fantasy to an otherwise wearable up-do.
