“Don’t forget to use SPF” is a phrase we hear often, but especially during the summer season. We may know how crucial sun protection is for preventing early signs of skin ageing, collagen loss, burns and skin cancer, but are you using the right sunscreen and are you applying it correctly? In search of proper protection against Hong Kong’s intensive rays, we’ve rounded up the ten best dermatologist-recommended sunscreens and asked Dr. Shiao Yi Wong from OT&P for her expert advice.
What should you look for in a sunscreen?
- Broad spectrum sunscreens with protection against both UVA rays (which damage our collagen, cause skin ageing, and increase the risk of skin cancer) and UVB rays (which lead to burns) are recommended.
- At least SPF 30 or higher is recommended for daily use in order to protect your skin from sunburn, early skin ageing, and skin cancer. Personally, I would recommend SPF 50 for more deliberate and prolonged sun exposure such as for hiking or golfing.
Are makeup products containing SPF sufficient sun protection?
- Makeup products containing SPF cannot replace sunscreens because they are more likely to be applied thinly and hence don’t achieve the level of protection they promise to offer.
- They are also less likely to be rub-resistant and water-resistant. Thus, I recommend using makeup products (containing SPF) as well as sunscreens.
