Marie Antoinette had a date with The Joker at Thom Browne’s SS14 show, where models appeared with dusty bouffants, powder-white complexions, and smudged lipstick and eyeshadow. Vivienne Westwood’s SS14 show also featured ghostly complexions with unnerving swatches of black and red, whereas Dior’s Couture show in 2004 gave us another taste of Elizabethan macabre.

Blade Runner
Razor sharp lines thanks to face contouring and hair styles channel the gritty, Neo-noir visuals of the cult film Blade Runner. For AW19, Rick Owens teamed up with 18-year-old makeup artist Salvia to create dystopian, sci-fi looks and Givenchy paired straight-cut bobs with otherworldly metallic lips and contoured cheeks, while both Dries Van Noten SS20 and Jean Paul Gaultier Haute Couture AW09 nodded to the iconic mask-like eyeshadow look.
