“Cropped bangs” saw a 51 percent search increase on Pinterest this year and a bold rise in popularity on the Spring/Summer 2019 runways. On the Prada and Miu Miu runways, we witnessed choppy two-inch fringes styled with girlish headbands for a rebellious remix on the babydoll look, while Dries van Noten and Byblos accented blunt, uniform edges with hits of neon for double the trendiness. From the runway to the red carpet, micro fringes got the star treatment via the likes of Emma Watson, who opted for boyish, spry wisps, to Penelope Cruz and Rooney Mara, who flaunted full blunt cuts.
Though just as striking today, above-the-brow fringes have long been markers of revolution in the history of women’s fashion and beauty, signalling the transformative eras of the 1920s jazz age flappers and the ingénue charm of Audrey Hepburn in the ’50s-’60s. This year, micro fringes return anew with even shorter lengths that barely reach mid-forehead, styled with an undone, low-maintenance finish that appeals to the modern woman.
Not only fashion-forward but flattering, too, cropped bangs have the ability to reshape the face by shortening the forehead and framing your features. But for those who can’t commit to the cut, follow in the footsteps of Bella Hadid or Emily Ratajkowski, who used temporary wigs to achieve lived-in, choppy fringes.
