Last night, the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles saw artists, celebrities and industry figures alike gathered to celebrate the best of music at the 2021 American Music Awards (AMAs).

Six-time AMA winner Cardi B made her hosting debut at the event and wowed in a stunning array of unique ensembles. She kicked off the AMAs incognito, wearing a masquerade-worthy veiled golden mask and an off-shoulder gown from Schiaparelli; then proceeded to own the stage full show-girl style in a sweeping feather headdress from Alexandre Vauthier Couture. Three vibrant and bejewelled outfit changes later, the rapper, who won Best Hip-Hop song with “Up” was back on the red carpets again, this time in a cream Miss Sohee ensemble comprising a shell-inspired capelet with a matching top and skirt.

Hailing from the other side of the globe was South Korean boyband BTS, who rocked up to the red carpet clad in black and grey Louis Vuitton suits, featuring a tie at the waist that recalls the design of the traditional Korean Hanbok. The global K-pop sensation later took the stage in a pastel yellow look to perform their English hit single “Butter”, which won them Favourite Pop Song. They were also crowned Favourite Pop Duo or Group and made AMA history as the first Asian artists to be nominated and win Artist of the Year.

And what are the AMAs without striking colours and dazzling sparkles? Entering the night as lead nominee, 18-year-old Gen Z icon and now New Artist of the Year Olivia Rodrigo was a vision in an iridescent David Koma sequinned gown that glimmered in hues of blue and purple. Billy Porter also got the memo: he committed to a breathtaking aqua and lent a signature Billy avant-garde touch to his monochrome blue ensemble with an umbrella headpiece.
