Rainbow-hued hair dye has always been at the heart of a signature K-pop look. Members of groups such as BTS, Blackpink, EXO, Twice and Red Velvet change the colour of their hair several times a year, not only to fuel a new beauty trend, but as a signal to fans that new music is on the way. Bold neons or subdued natural shades are often chosen to match the theme of a new album, music video or tour concept. BTS debuted a vibrant array of blue, lilac, orange and pink hues for their Love Yourself “Answer” and “Her” tour concepts — a noticeable contrast to the all-brown ensemble for the Love Yourself “Tear” concept. Other Korean idols have used eye-catching dyes to establish their style icon status, such as Big Bang’s G Dragon or 2NE1’s CL.
