A household name in Hong Kong and China, Faye Wong (王菲) is the reigning queen of Canto-pop, known for her ethereal voice, alternative style, and cool-girl persona. Her rise to style icon status took off in the mid-‘90s with the help of Hong Kong-born stylist and designer Titi Kwan, who honed Wong’s fashion persona with his own designs and a medley of niche designers including Ann Demeulemeester, Dries van Noten, Maison Martin Margiela, and Helmut Lang. Her icon status continued to swell when she appeared as the quirky sandwich shop hostess with a buzz cut in Wong Kar-Wai’s cult film Chungking Express, and her experimental style sense flourished further on-stage with daring looks that mixed statement hairstyles, avant-garde makeup by Zing, and even a Marjan Pejoski redux of Bjork’s famous swan dress. Since her tour days, Faye Wong has remained a force within fashion circles, as a front-row guest and collector of Phoebe Philo’s Celine, as well as a supporter of emerging talent such as Wang Hung. When you catch her making a rare public appearance, Wong is often seen sporting louche, menswear cuts and a chic lob worn with a single statement earring.
