Fashion’s biggest and most glamorous night out is back! Yes, again. While it has only been eight months since our favourite celebrities graced New York’s most iconic steps, the Met Gala is well back on track and as per tradition, will be held on the first Monday of May.

From this year’s co-hosts and dress code to who we might spot on the step and repeat, here is everything we know so far about the 2022 Met Gala.

What is the Met Gala?

Traditionally held on the first Monday of May, the Met Gala or the Met Ball is an annual fundraising event for The Costume Institute under The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Each year, a theme for the Gala is announced in alignment with the Institute’s annual exhibition. As the invite-only affair requires thematic dressing, it promises a red carpet studded with the most creative and over-the-top looks worn by the biggest names in fashion and entertainment. Hence, it has made its name as one of the most important events on the annual fashion calendar.

When and where will it take place?

The Met Gala is scheduled to take place on Monday 2 May, 2022, and like any other year, it will be hosted at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

What is the theme this year?

Somewhat a sequel to the 2021 Met Gala, the 2022 event continues to be all about Americana. Andrew Bolton, the Wendy Yu Curator from The Costume Institute shared with Vogue that he felt it was time to re-examine American identity and fashion after seeing a myriad of creative responses from young American designers towards socio-political movements surrounding topics such as diversity, gender fluidity and sustainability over the past few years. ““I really do believe that American fashion is undergoing a renaissance”, he stated.

What is this year’s exhibition?

The Costume Institute will present the second part of its two-part exhibit, In America: An Anthology of Fashion across thirteen of the American period rooms at the Met. “The stories really reflect the evolution of American style, but they also explore the work of individual tailors, dress-makers, and designers,” says Bolton to Vogue. 

“What’s exciting for me is that some of the names will be very familiar to students of fashion, like Charles James, Halston, and Oscar de la Renta, but a lot of the other names really have been forgotten, overlooked or relegated into the footnotes of fashion history. So one of the main intentions of the exhibition is to spotlight the talents and contributions of these individuals, and many of them are women.”
