As Lady Whistledown’s enigmatic scandal sheets surface once again in Bridgerton’s 1813 Mayfair, it is time for the It-girls of 2022 on the other side of the screen to gear up for another escape into the decadent opulence of period drama-inspired fashion. 

Shortly after its Christmas Day debut in 2020, the Regency-era Netflix series not only garnered the attention of a whopping 82 million households, but also (by virtue of the dashing Duke of Hastings) made half its audience want to dress up like a worthy debutante. This Bridgerton fashion hangover was soon dubbed regencycore by the internet. Its cure? Empire-waist maxis, opera length gloves, pearl studded headbands, and of course, corsets.

Celebrities and bonafide fashionistas alike all started to look way beyond the 1990s to inspire their style moodboards. This applied to their magazine cover shoots and music videos too, as proven by Billie Eilish’s jaw dropping nude corset moment on British Vogue and Dua Lipa’s Marie Antoinette-esque look for Demeanor, which comprised of a gilded corset from Jean Paul Gaultier’s Spring 1998 couture.

Fast forward to 2022 and the alluring, figure-hugging corset still has us all cinched up. In Euphoria Season 2, Alexa Demie stole the show in a black crocheted iteration from Dion Lee. Off-screen in Paris, vibrant corseted silhouettes found their way onto half the models walking Donatella Versace’s AW22 runway, with all eyes on Bella Hadid’s crimson bustier, paired with a red minidress and latex leggings for a fiery, monochrome look.
