Every year, stars from all over gather in Italy for the annual Venice Film Festival. And every year, we get to watch as they create iconic fashion moments both on and off the red carpet. From the “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” cast and their thematic water taxi ensembles, to Taylor Russell with her incredible archival pulls, here are the best dressed stars of the 81st Venice Film Festival.

In the grand game of red carpet fashion, Taylor Russell is an 81st Venice Film Festival winner. The jury member, Canadian actress, and Loewe darling is no stranger to a red carpet head-turner. In fact, she’s mastered them. Russell’s first victory was an archival John Galliano Spring 1995 skirt suit for the “Luigi De Laurentiis” Venice Award for a Debut Film jury photocall, swiftly followed by an ethereal gown from Chanel’s Spring 1993 couture collection for the “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” red carpet.

At the “Maria” premiere, Russell graced the red carpet in a Loewe chiffon dress that extended into a scarf draped across the neck. The custom piece allowed room for some dazzling Tiffany & Co. jewels, including a necklace worn backwards to flaunt a giant diamond pendant hanging from the centre. Clever. Russell’s stylish streak continued into day six and seven of the film festival, where she took on the bubble skirt trend in a crisp Alaïa set and went back to black with another bespoke Loewe creation.

One thing is for sure: Jenna Ortega and her stylist Enrique Melendez stay committed to a theme. The modern scream queen’s frothy Dior couture gown was a nod to the original “Beetlejuice” film, paying tribute to Lydia Deetz’s red wedding dress. Prior to walking the red carpet, Ortega donned Paul Smith’s first women’s tux in oxblood at the “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” photocall, and even arrived in Venice rocking quintessential Beetlejuice style codes.

Hoyeon Jung
For the world premiere of the Apple TV+ series “Disclaimer”, the Korean model-turned-actress slipped into a shimmery red-hot number by Louis Vuitton. Complete with a simple black sandal and bright-white diamonds, the look was a heavenly match for Jung’s cherry red hair.
Lady Gaga

Leave it to Lady Gaga to bring the drama! Her red carpet look for “Joker: Folie à Deux” was an effortless marriage of vintage glamour with avant-garde sensibilities. A Philip Treacy headpiece from the milliner’s 2001 couture collection, a plunging Christian Dior couture ball gown with a voluminous godet skirt, and large Tiffany & Co. sparklers realised a more refined take on Mother Monster’s signature theatrical fashion. Ahead of her red carpet appearance, Gaga was snapped looking very demure, very mindful in a black velvet dress and matching beret as she headed to a photocall. The fit-and-flare silhouette of the garment recalled the polka dot La Roxx mini she wore on her arrival to the city.

Are Sophie Wilde and Loewe the next fashion duo to watch? For the premiere of her latest film “Babygirl”, the Australian star descended onto the red carpet in a strapless silk gown that featured an unexpected draped volume at the back—a fun Loewe detail. The accessories were minimal yet effective; archival 1997 Cartier jewels added the perfect touch of glamour, but it was the sheer eye mask we couldn’t take our eyes off of.

Isabelle Huppert’s love affair with Balenciaga continues at this year’s Venice Film Festival. The acclaimed French actress and president juror has been dressed by the brand for every edition of the festival since 2021, but who’s complaining? Whether it’s a silhouette from Demna’s first Balenciaga haute couture collection paired with white gloves and Cartier jewels; a commanding cheetah print cape dress with sharp black boots; or red trackies and a playful “I <3 Paris” cap, Huppert pulls off every look with the perfect amount of French insouciance.

For the premieres of “Queer” and “Joker: Folie à Deux” Huppert finally switched out her edgy Balenciaga get-ups for some Armani Privé sparkle. Both ensembles were from the brand’s Autumn/Winter 2024 runway, and brought out a more elegant side to the Parisienne. Our favourite Huppert look however, has to be the head-to-toe Tod’s outfit from day six—nothing screams chic like an all-black palette, perfectly tailored trousers, and a leather blazer. We’re taking notes.
