Anticipation and excitement has been sky-high ever since the theme of this year’s Met Gala was announced. In line with the Costume Institute’s Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty exhibition, the Met Gala invited Hollywood’s most fashionable faces to pay tribute to the late designer through dress. Donning archival looks by Lagerfeld himself, or clad in gorgeous interpretations of his visionary works by other designers, this year’s host of celebrities did not disappoint.

The Met steps were a celebration of the ineffable legacy Lagerfeld has left behind. Among the first to arrive were co-hosts Dua Lipa and Penelope Cruz, who each flaunted Chanel haute couture looks — a sculpted tweed ballgown from Chanel’s Autumn/Winter 1992 collection and a hooded bridal-inspired Chanel Spring 1998 dress, respectively. Supermodel Gisele Bündchen also dipped into Chanel’s archive for her long-awaited appearance on the red carpet, looking absolutely radiant in Karl Lagerfeld’s closing bridal look for the maison’s Spring 2007 haute couture show.

Sending the Internet into a frenzy with their red carpet look was none other than Nicole Kidman. Evidently, the world has not forgotten her iconic 2004 short film with Baz Luhrmann for the Chanel No.5 fragrance. The actress slipped into the memorable ostrich feather gown from the commercial once more, thus proving the enduring qualities of Lagerfeld’s couture.

Others turned to Lagerfeld’s cat, Choupette, for inspiration. Met Gala first-timer Doja Cat opted for a feline face prosthetic to bring her sparkling Oscar de La Renta vision to life, resulting in a look that so flawlessly captured the glamorous avant-garde style that has become synonymous with the singer. As per usual, Lil Nas X was not to be missed in a look that saw him morph into an otherworldly creature far beyond the conventional cat. The star was glammed up in pearls, crystals and shimmering silver paint, all in thanks to the expert hands of beauty legend Pat McGrath. Not one to go the subtle route, Jared Leto arrived as the night’s final cat, disguised as Choupette herself. The fluffy white, long-haired, blue-eyed Birman cat costume only really differed from Lagerfeld’s beloved pet in size.
