For two years, the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, has been waiting for the return of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, that series of three-day weekends that sees celebrities party it up in their best festival fashion. In 2022, the time has come. The Colorado Desert might be arid but for this weekend, and the next, it certainly won’t be dry of colour. Along with the event’s impressive headliners—which this year includes Billie Eilish, Doja Cat, Megan Thee Stallion and Harry Styles—guests did well to remind onlookers that festival fashion was far from forgotten. Sequins, crochet, and a bucketload of fringe—all of Coachella’s 250,000 attendees tried their hand at an art that has remained relatively untouched since the halcyon days of 2019.
For those like Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber, function has adopted equal importance to form. Simple matching sets have defined Jenner’s Coachella style so far, grounded by flat sandals: a white tank and drawstring cargo pants by Local European, to a black singlet and leather trousers by Australian designer Caroline Reznik. Bieber has also demonstrated her penchant for crop tops, though her approach to accessorising was a little bolder. Snakeskin leggings by Luna Del Pinal, belly chains by Ruby Stella and a crochet-leather shoulder bag by De Pino offered her ensemble a touch of the Western flair that has become inseparable from festival fashion.
On stage, Coachella’s semi-maximalist, anything-goes attitude translated into punchy colours and textures. Conan Gray’s turn in hot pink Valentino was a particular standout; we anticipate that Pierpaolo Piccioli’s resumé will only broaden as the year progresses. Also on board the fuschia train was Tinashe in Marshall Columbia, though for Alessandro Michele muse Harry Styles, it was always going to be Gucci. The As It Was singer bopped to his tunes in a rainbow sequin jumpsuit from the label—and shimmied with Shania Twain at one point in his set.
Below, we round up all the best-dressed celebrities from Coachella 2022, from Kim Kardashian and Sydney Sweeney, to Paris Hilton and Vanessa Hudgens.
