At last, the Miu Miu skirt mania seems to be ebbing, but fashion—never one to allow a break in the cycle—has offered up another piece at the altar of virality. Like Miuccia Prada’s belted beige confection, it’s itty, bitty and micro to the max, plucked straight off the runways of spring/summer ’22. Say hello to the Coperni crop top: barely there on the torso, and beloved of It-girls.
Perhaps fame was always this crop top’s destiny. Not many designs have the chance to debut on a supermodel, and this Coperni creation appeared on none other than Gigi Hadid. She closed the show for the Parisian label last September, with freshly dyed dark auburn hair to match the orange design—a long-sleeved, strappy, wraparound thing that knotted at the sternum and covered little else. Down below, Coperni’s Sébastien Meyer and Arnaud Vaillant (formerly of Courrèges) played a game of contrasts; instead of going down the Miu Miu route of ‘mini here, micro there’, the designers styled the piece with a floor-sweeping skirt, low-slung and encrusted with silver. Earlier in the presentation, Paloma Elsesser also donned a version in acid green with black suit pants—the Coperni girl at work, before swapping into a skirt for her after-five discotheque.
As fate would have it, Bella Hadid picked up where Gigi left off—the sisterhood of the travelling crop top, if you will. Hers was a pink version, netted and dripping with duochrome discs, and she wore it this February with her signature Y2K flair. No business-ready trousers here: just an ankle-length cargo skirt with pockets and a drawstring waist to double down on the aughts casual.
It takes more than a couple of cameos to make a cult piece, of course—lest we forget the ever-growing list of celebrities who have worn that Miu Miu set, which now includes Lorde, Nicole Kidman, Emily Ratajkowski and Zendaya. Enter: Rihanna, maker of trends, pusher of sartorial envelopes. At a Fenty Beauty launch in Los Angeles, the singer and entrepreneur welcomed a familiar Coperni crop top into her maternity closet in a custom silver to match her spangled skirt. To add some extra bling on her baby bump? A diamond belly chain from Parisian jewellery label Messika, “personally designed” for her as “an ode to femininity and motherhood”.
With RiRi herself now on board, it’s only a matter of time before the micro crop—like the micro skirt before it—does the rounds on social media and street style. Whether you’re subscribed to Miu Miu, Coperni (or both), one thing’s for sure: your torso will see a lot of sun this season.
