Growing up watching Marvel movies with her dad, Kathryn Newton wanted to be the “biggest Marvel superhero of all time”. Little did young Kathryn know that she would go on to star in MCU’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania as Cassandra (Cassie) Lang, the daughter of the titular Ant-Man. As one of the faces of a new rising generation of Marvel superheroes, the actress shares all about her new film and being a part of the Marvel family.
How would you describe your character Cassandra Lang? What are some of her most attractive qualities? Do you see yourself in Cassie?
Cassie Lang leads with her heart and her ambition is fueled by emotion. She is impatient, independent, and an ambitious kid who wants to be like her dad. I love how she takes care of people. I am impatient like Cassie. I think we’re both learning about our personal power and how to be in the moment to see things clearly.
Has Cassandra always been the role you wanted to play when you joined the Marvel family? Besides this, what other superhero(es) do you wish to play?
Yes, she was! You know when you go to a Marvel movie, and you leave feeling like you want to be a superhero too? That was me when I was a kid, thinking I wanted to be the “biggest Marvel superhero of all time”, which is ironic because Cassie Lang has the ability to increase her size to 40 feet tall and she can shrink to the size of an ant. So, there you go! My dream came true when I got the call to play Cassie. I would play any superhero because I connect with the idea of being a hero.

Have you watched Ant-Man (2015) before?
My dad always took me to the Marvel movies, and we loved Ant-Man because we connected to the father-daughter storyline. Family lies at the heart of the Ant-Man movies.
What was it like to work with director Peyton Reed?
Peyton Reed knew I was Cassie Lang, and because he knew it, I believed it. I trusted him, and he showed me where to go to get to where I needed to be. He is patient and positive, and he takes the time to bring out the best in me. Taking risks with Cassie became normal because of my trust in Peyton. We laughed. A lot.

What do you enjoy the most about being part of the Marvel family? Do you have any interesting stories you can share with us ?
It feels like the best family that you ever want to be in. I also enjoy my supersuit a lot. It makes me feel invincible and it happens to be my favourite colour.
What can we expect from Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania?
You can expect something you’ve never seen before from The Ant-Man movies. It’s a lot bigger than anything before. Expect to be entertained, happy, sad, scared, amazed and satisfied.
Of all the roles you have played, which one are you most satisfied with and why?
I’m always satisfied. I give it my all when I’m there on set, and that way, I know I didn’t hold anything back. I love taking risks and exceeding what I thought was possible. I am not afraid to make a fool of myself for a character.

Have you always wanted to be an actress? If you had the chance to choose another career path, what would it be? Why?
It’s not like there was a day when I said I wanted to act, I just was an actor. I was always doing it. Even watching The Jungle Book I would imitate the animals. Instead of going to sleep when my parents would read There’s a Monster in my Closet, I’d be acting out the parts of the monster instead. If I had another career it would have been professional golf or something in that world. I love healthy competition and being an athlete. The sport has given me a lot of confidence and I wish more girls played golf. Just for fun!
Walk us through your perfect day off. What do you like to do during free time?
My perfect day off is music and tea in the morning followed by yoga or ballet. Then an afternoon 9 holes with my dad and my poodles. Wrapping it up with a dinner at home with friends. Then a long bath before bed.
How has your fashion style evolved over the years?
Well I’m still wearing my clothes from 8th grade so I wouldn’t say it’s changed much. I used to want to look like everyone else and now I want to stand out in a crowd, so that part is changing. I’m okay with just being me whatever that means on any given day. Me being me is a work in progress and I will take a fashion risk.
