This year’s Met Gala theme “Camp: Notes on Fashion” quizzed its guests on their interpretations of camp. Many stars dressed in artifice, glamour and exaggeration, while others answered with humour and subversion. However, some of the most memorable outfits of the night nodded to camp being “the idea that there is no such thing as originality” — as described by Andrew Bolton, curator in charge of the exhibition. Speaking to this notion, many standout looks referenced camp icons and specific moments in history: Celine Dion channeled Judy Garland in Ziegfeld Girl; Gemma Chan nodded to Elizabeth Taylor in Boom!; Ciara honoured Diana Ross and the Studio 54 days; Lily Collins mirrored Priscilla Presley on her wedding day; Kim Kardashian alluded to Sophia Loren in Boy on a Dolphin; and Emily Ratajkowski remixed two legendary Cher looks. Childhood fantasy also inspired many designs, including Zendaya’s Cinderella gown and Madelaine Psetch’s Tinkerbell dress, as did many contemporary pop culture moments, such as Jared Leto recreating the infamous Gucci head runway moment, and Kacey Musgraves transforming into a real-life Moschino Barbie Doll.
