New York Fashion Week may have come to a close on Sunday, but the buzz around fashion in the city is not dying down any time soon — the red carpet has just been rolled out for the 2021 MTV VMAs today, and with it plenty of stylish looks from our favourite celebrities.
Purple seems to the colour of this year’s VMAs. Lil Nas X kicked off the event in a jaw-dropping lilac ensemble from Versace, which included an off-the-shoulder top and train. Also donning Versace was Gen Z sensation Olivia Rodrigo, who made her first-ever MTV VMAs appearance in a vintage gown from the Maison’s Spring 2001 collection. The young singer later rocked the stage in a lavender and sky blue tie dye mini dress accessorised with matching lace-up gloves that brought some edge to her girly look. Kacey Musgraves engulfed the red carpet in her royal purple feather hat from Valentino‘s Fall 2021 Couture collection, which she paired with a purple dress and evening gloves in contrasting bright red.
But it wouldn’t be the VMAs without a fashion look going viral: Doja Cat left the audience speechless by receiving the Best Collaboration Award for Kiss Me More with SZA in a Thom Browne dress from the designer’s Spring 2018 collection, which the artist described on stage as her “worm” outfit. She later returned wearing a giant headpiece that is essentially a regular-sized red chair.
