Dubbed Hollywood’s biggest night out, it goes without saying that the Oscars’ red carpet sets the stage for a showcase of Hollywood glamour — and this year was no exception, especially for the sartorially adventurous.
As per, Billie Eilish understood the assignment. For her first appearance as an Academy Awards nominee, Eilish dressed to impress: she arrived in a dramatic all-black tiered gown from Gucci, bringing her signature statement-making edge without sacrificing allure. After delivering a hauntingly beautiful performance with Finneas of their James Bond theme song “No Time To Die”, the 20-year-old singer and her brother took home the Best Original Song award, becoming the first Oscars winner to be born in the 2000s.
Tailoring certainly had its moment, with a shirtless Timothée Chalamet turning heads left and right in a sleek sequinned black suit from Nicolas Ghesquière’s Louis Vuitton womenswear runway. Chanel’s very own punk princess Kristen Stewart rocked up in a custom black satin shorts suit from the brand (matching with Dylan Meyer, of course!) and went even bolder by topping off her open-button look with a Chanel Fine Jewelry ganse noir spinel necklace in place of a tie. To show his solidarity for the people of Ukraine, Benedict Cumberbatch wore the country’s flag on the lapel of his Brioni suit. Elsewhere, Simu Liu looked dapper in red Versace while Kodi Smit-McPhee oozed charisma in sky blue Bottega Veneta suiting.
As much as awards ceremonies are about celebrating the novel and the new, the saying “old is gold” still rung true on this year’s carpet — and Kirsten Dunst showed us why. Dipping into the archives of Christian Lacroix, the actress made a stunning and sustainable entrance in a ruffled gown dating back to Autumn 2002, an elegant look that remains timeless today.
