Few things are certain, but the words x Sacai at the end of a collaboration name generally mean something worthwhile is about to happen. Over the course of the 23 years since launching Sacai, Chitose Abe has linked up with Nike on court outfits for Naomi Osaka and sneakers for hybebeasts the world over, with A.P.C. on denim jackets and spliced sweatshirts, and with such music legends as Parliament Funkadelic, Daniel Johnston, and The Beatles. Her last IRL show at Paris Fashion Week featured a collab with no less an institution than NASA. Now, she is launching a partnership with fellow Japanese designer Tomo Koizumi on a selection of bags that marry their singular aesthetics.
Launched in China at the end of 2020 as a part of Abe’s Hello Sacai pop-up stores, the collection with Koizumi is arriving in the United States this week exclusively at Nordstrom stores. “For me there needs to be a genuine connection with any collaboration I take part in,” says Abe, “and it is always important to me that there is a balance between the two brands and a genuine interest on both sides.”
The balance between Abe’s hybridization and Koizumi’s OTT ruffles comes down to flounce following function: Koizumi’s organza ombré tiers are added to the sporty bum bags and duffles in Abe’s offering. “His ruffled creations bring joyful entertainment and I wanted to bring those to a practical level to our everyday life through the hybridization of our two styles,” says Abe.
“It’s a great honor to have my signature design—ruffles and colors—used as part of Sacai’s hybrid design,” Koizumi adds, noting that Abe’s ability to “mix various elements freely, still keeps a harmony and elegance.”
With cascades of tangerine to lemon ruffles and azure to ivory frills, the Sacai x Tomo Koizumi collection offers a slightly more punkish and over-the-top kind of beauty than your typical summery tote. All the more reason to buy one for your re-emergence wardrobe.
Tomo Koizumi will be speaking with John Galliano at Vogue’s Forces of Fashion conference on July 7-8, 2021. Buy your tickets here; you won’t want to miss it!
