Though it sounds like nothing more than another viral fashion micro-trend, the spring/summer 2023 runways have proved that mermaidcore is here to stay. One might recall Versace’s SS21 utopian underwater world of crystal-embellished seashell bustiers and starfish printed dresses, but this season, designers have adopted a more comprehensive approach to deep-sea dressing. Blumarine creative director Nicola Brognano took her excitement for “The Little Mermaid” remake and channeled that into swishy jersey dresses with cascading ruffles and denim fishtail skirts. Meanwhile, models on the Ludovic de Saint Sernin SS23 runway stepped out in clingy sequinned ensembles and wet hair, as if emerging from nearby waters.

In honour of ‘The Little Mermaid” live-action film’s official premiere, we’re diving headfirst into all the aquatic styles that fashion has to offer. From diaphanous ruffled dresses fit for Princess Ariel, to crocheted pieces that are more shipwreck chic and less granny glam, here’s our complete guide to shopping the mermaidcore trend.
Ruffles Galore
Washed ashore, but make it fashion. This season’s take on ruffles make a solid case for mermaid romanticism. Fluid waves of fabric and wafty trim create added movement to lightweight dresses, tops, and skirts. Take after the frothy shapes of crashing waves with Cecilie Bahnsen’s ruched handbag in a pastel seafoam shade, or make a splash in a statement top from It-girl brand Fancì. Vibrant pieces from Acne Studios and The Andamane evoke the colourful palette of coral reefs, while Jil Sanders’ midi skirt offers a more structured ruffle reminiscent of marine organisms.
Shimmering Scales
What’s a mermaid without her tail? Pay tribute to those majestic fins with sparkling pieces of your own. For those who dare to stand out, a ruched purple number from Self-Portrait or a Pinko top decked out in multi-coloured macro sequins will do just the trick. On the other hand, Wandler offers a more laidback take with a pair of iridescent jeans, and Simkhai’s marble print dress feels like a dip into warm, tropical waters. If a subtle nod is more your speed, Paco Rabanne’s signature chainmail bags have long been a favourite of celebrities and fashion insiders alike. While they don’t quite paint the picture of mermaid scales, they’re a perfect reference to the everyday human treasures of Ariel’s secret grotto.
What A Catch!
Crafty techniques like crochet, beading and weaving scream summers by the beach. Brands like Dodo Bar Or, Cult Gaia, and Bottega Veneta are masters of the craft, with a compelling range of clothing, shoes and accessories to choose from. Miu Miu has also just released a range of their most beloved handbags in crocheted or woven iterations in time for the summer.
Ocean Blue
A million shades of aquatic blue, the vast oceans themselves are an endless source of inspiration. Slip into shallo waters with lustrous, silky options from Blumarine and Burberry, or keep it casual with Loewe’s asymmetric denim skirt. A David Koma mini dress embellished with a crystal starfish is a playful approach to the marine aesthetic, while Simon Miller’s shiny turquoise sandals prove the mermaidcore trend works with more timeless silhouettes too.
She Sells Seashells
Lean into mermaid accessorising with the treasures of the sea. Arriving in all shapes, sizes and colours, seashells are a true testament to the natural wonders of Mother Nature. Reach for a trusty Casablanca pearl necklace with hand-painted glass beads for that handmade feel, or add a glamorous touch with Tiffany & Co. Schlumberger earrings and a luxurious conch clutch from Judith Leiber Couture. Meanwhile, Bevza and Aquazzura offer wardrobe staples with a mermaid-inspired twist.
