Jil Sander’s Spring/Summer 2020 Ready-to-Wear collection was centred on the notion of opposites. This season, Luke and Lucie Meier’s distinct strain of minimalism was injected with a spirited earthiness inspired by ‘60s psychedelia and the Vienna Secession art movement. The result was a collection that balanced the brand’s precision tailoring and purist palette with organic textures and a raw sense of craft.
Hallmark moments of juxtaposition included the raffia tassels that jutted out from the smooth panels of wool coats, the amber buttons that punctuated clean, shapely silhouettes, and the lace-like 3D-printed screens that adorned shoulders and attached to the bottoms of dresses like plaques. Novel prints and textiles also made for some of the most alluring looks. First were the marble print jersey dresses, then was a patchwork silk frock, and finally was a full-length gown made completely from woven raffia, with fringes that draped across the shoulders onto the floor.
