Proenza Schouler’s tough-chic, city swagger codes are stronger than ever as they enter a new chapter for Spring/Summer 2020. This season, it’s ‘80s power dressing meets New York savoir-faire, and Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez’s new seasonal take strikes a unique balance between severe angularity and fluid draping.
While last season was more about deconstruction, this season was more sculptural. Blazers boasted sharp, boxy shoulders and dresses were artfully draped to create the illusion of an hourglass figure. Classic office clothing was refreshed with the soft curves of a generously draped neckline, or the graphic geometry of wide-collar lapels, and sumptuous leather mingled seamlessly with crepe panels for added texture. A colour palette of beige, black and white grounded the collection in utilitarianism, while vivid abstract prints spoke to the dynamism of an urban setting. The clothes had a graceful movement to them, appealing to the smart, polished woman who’s always on-the-go. And the accessories, including large leather tote bags, strappy heels and Birkenstocks carried in the hands, honoured the modern working girl’s daily needs.
