Bangkok is so happening; I am super energised by the creativity, the vibe, and the people there. I feel like I discover a handful of new designers and brands every time I go. It’s the best when I’m donning one of my Thai discoveries, and people stop to ask what I’m wearing.
One particular brand I discovered a year ago is Chato Studio, which is an accessories brand (bags, sunglasses, jewellery). On 21st November, Chato Studio staged its first runway show, called Dancing Pillow. I was there!
Thai actresses Freen Sarocha Chankimha and Thanaerng were in attendance, and Elly Lam from Hong Kong was also there. I also met this super cute Thai boy band that goes by the name Atlas. What caught my eye first was their style. They will perform in Hong Kong on 20th December at the Kai Tak Sports Club at a show headlined by Mirror. Of course, I’ve been listening to Mayday Mayday non-stop now.
I think people weren’t sure what to expect from Wachana’s first runway show presenting ready-to-wear. Chato Studio’s language has always been leather goods and canvas bags. Wachana Charoensomsamai is not only the creative director but also a bit of a Thai style influencer herself, who has inspired quite a following. One day she’ll pair baggy jeans with kitten heels and a white tank top, and then wear a long, sheer, flowy dress the next.
The ready-to-wear collection was a nod to her sense of free spirit, with a sporty, casual, tailored element, some glamour, and a command of leather details. The short lengths were fun and youthful. There were great white cotton pieces: a full-length button-down shirt with a back vent, ruffled petticoat shorts, a mini balloon skirt, a denim leather-trimmed engineer jacket, and micro mini shirt dresses.
There were feathered skirts and beading that shimmered.
There were shifts that resembled leather cages, handmade in the Chato Studio donut chain leather motif. Super luxe and a true display of amazing craftsmanship.
But the stars of the show were the carry-on wheelie bags with the signature Chato Studio leather craft, giving cool luxury, and the coordinating shoulder bag that sat perfectly balanced on top. Our prayers for travel chic have been answered—perfect timing for the holidays too!
As the show was more of a daytime event than evening, I wanted to look not overly dressed up but still presentable and in the spirit of the occasion. I opted for a white satin button-down shirt from Dries Van Noten and a rose quartz sequinned pencil skirt for a bit of unexpected glamour, making it clear I wasn’t aiming for a serious look. I also threw on an armful of leather-covered bangles because I felt it would be fitting for Chato Studio. Leather can be such a good understated luxe element in styling.
