今次比賽選址是法屬玻里尼西亞大溪地的Teahupo’o舉行，是世界衝浪首屈一指的地方，以巨大、穩定宛如玻璃厚牆般的海浪聞名。但同時因為地勢屬珊瑚礁環伺，形成的強力管道亦容易把人捲下，造成危險。亦因此在今年的比賽期間，有水上電單車快速救援選手。

當時 Gabriel Medina被浪衝上半空，作出興奮慶祝的跳躍動作時，就被拍下其空中懸浮一刻，成為一時佳話。不過今次不單止是運動員威風的一刻，法新社的攝影師 Jérôme Brouillet亦完美捕捉了他完成動作後，在水上興奮舉起手勢的一刻，被喻為是奧運史上其中經典一刻！
原來這位如此成功的攝影師Jérôme Brouillet，本身都是一位滑浪手，他留意到當時巨浪比一般的浪來得高，與 6 位攝影師同坐一船的他根本看不到巨浪中的選手。不過當Gabriel Medina出現時，他預測好他出現的時間，捕捉好時機，立即按下 4 次快門，最佳照片就攝下了，出現了這張彷如水上行走的神奇一刻照片。
