Lee Miller and Roland Penrose met Françoise Gilot through Picasso. Gilot first encountered Picasso in a Paris restaurant when she was twenty-one. They spent a somewhat tempestuous decade together and had two children, Claude and Paloma. Like fellow artist Dora Marr, Gilot's work suffered through her association to Picasso and she has not always received the attention she deserves. Her paintings, which move from the cubism of her early career to more abstract works, demonstrate a deep affinity with colour.
